Why do you care? (As with most threads, the original question was answered within the first page. The rest is just open-ended discussion.)

*LMAO* Oh really now ;)

Well if questions were answered and the point is just to ramble. Carry on. Who am I to step on a social gathering? :p

Hey on a more serious note.

Early on it was agreed the speakers should be from the same manufacturer.

I kinda question that assumption. Looking at my own set of "same brand" speakers, I realize they pretty much all have different specs. One could argue it's because of the different applications and I'd agree.

But how much of a stretch then is it to simply get speakers from different brand, that could be performing better in each application?

Ie, I have bookshelves as surround speakers now and I'm considering getting "dedicated" surrounds to replace them. Everything is from Monitor Audio but I'm tempted by the Axiom brand too...

If you mean as each other, then that is obvious since the dicussion has been limited to a single stereo pair. If you mean same manufacturer as the electronics, the concensus was that that is not such a good idea.

I meant in a HT application. Each pair identical, but different fronts vs rears?

I have just ordered the Cambridge Audio Azur 340A and 340C. Full report when I get them. So far, I have been very impressed with my Mirage Omni 350s, and hopefully they will benefit even more from the new electronics.
(If I do get new speakers in the future, I lean towards good bookshelves. Perhaps Totem or NHT.)

Oh, man I just saw the NHT Classic Four Towers on sale in Audio Advisor catalogue for 50%. But I just checked their website, and it is not listed as 50%.

If I decribe my ideal small floorstander in abstract terms (without reference to any particular make/model), and then go back and read what I wrote, it turns out that I have described the Omni 350s exactly. This is why any future upgrade will be bookshelves instead. The Classic Threes do look like a good choice.
In any event, I have spent my money for now.:)

Hey Joe,

Man post on your gear, it looks nice. I was over AA looking at some of their stuff, neat.

Thanks. I just hope it proves to be a clearly audible improvement. Looks and build quality are nice, but only better sound justifies the cost in my mind.

One brand is a waste - I would just be happy to have my electronics either all black or all silver.

Assuming the company you are buying your integrated amp from also makes a good CD player (or vice-versa), I can't see what is "wasteful" about it. Also, when the components are stacked directly without a rack (as mine always are), merely the same color doesn't cut it. Finally, it is nice to be able to operate both units with one remote.

I got them last night, and I needn't have worried. The sound is simply amazing. My immediate impression was of Koko the gorilla with his pet kitten: brute force under absolute control. Detail, soundstage, and bass tightness are all present and accounted for. Build quality is first rate (I have never picked up a ten pound CD player before!) The only negatives are a non-dimmable display and a spectrum slightly biased toward treble (though with zero sibilance or harshness.)
I am sufficiently impressed to try a pair of the small, affordable CA bookshelves.

The S30 bookshelves are on their way, along with some really sweet looking stands. Multiple 5-star reviews. I am certain that they will be an enjoyable listen. Whether or not they can replace my Mirage towers remains to be seen (if not, I will hang on to them for those times when I want to hear something different.:))
