Jim Blackwood is a recording/mastering engineer in Tucson, AZ and knows what he's doing. His work on live recordings for Calexico, Giant Sand/Howe Gelb, Rainer, and others is superb.

Happy Saint Paddy's Day

Fantastic song but with all those missing teeth, Shane McGowan is almost unintelligible, so I’ve included the lyrics below. Don’t let the pretty looks fool you, the man is a genius.

Thanks and praises
Thanks to Jesus
I bet on the Bottle of Smoke
I went to hell
And to the races
To bet on the Bottle of Smoke

The day being clear
The sky being bright
He came up on the left
Like a streak of light
Like a drunken fack
On a Saturday night
Up came the Bottle of Smoke

Twenty facking five to one
Me gambling days are done
I bet on a horse called the Bottle of Smoke
And my horse won

Stewards inquiries
Swift and fiery
I had the Bottle of Smoke
Inquisitions and suppositions
I had the Bottle of Smoke

Fack the stewards
A trip to Lourdes
Might give the old fackers
The power of sight
Screaming springers and stoppers
And call out coppers
But the money still gleams in my hand like a light

Bookies cursing
Cars reversing
I had the Bottle of Smoke
Glasses steaming
Vessels bursting
I had the Bottle of Smoke
Slip a fifty to the wife
And for each brat a crisp new five
To give me a break on a Saturday night
When I had the Bottle of Smoke
Priests and maidens
Drunk as pagans
They had the Bottle of Smoke
Sins forgiven and celebrations
They had the Bottle of Smoke

Fack the Yanks
And drink their wives
The moon is clear
The sky is bright
I'm happy as the horses shite
Up came the Bottle of Smoke

Loves me some Pogues.

Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash!
I discovered the Pogues and Shane McGowan in particular, in 1988, with the release of If I Should Fall from Grace with God (********), at a local record shop. To say I was gob-smacked would be an understatement. I furiously collected their 2 previous albums within a week and started spreading the word, while eagerly awaiting their next release. I have all their albums, with and without Shane and all of Shane's solo recordings. While their post-Shane releases don't have the same impact, the bands musicality is undeniable. Shane's brilliance continued to shine with different backup bands, like the Popes ... get it? :D ... after he was kicked out of the band for his asinine & self-destructive behavior. Sadly his hell-bent for destruction lifestyle has impacted his health to such a degree that he's but a mere shell of the man he once was. Like any brilliant shooting star, he ran out of gas and flickered away.
