OMG was that challenging!!

I just hooked up my new receiver. My other one was just for the 5.1 surround so I never bothered to connect anything but the speakers and the audio inputs. This one I am using for all of my components...TV, VCR, DVD, and Wii. Oh my frigging GAWD was that challenging!! First I had to go through all of my TV sources to find the on-screen set up, and I wasn't getting anything except the TV audio (as I have the optical cable from the cable box to the receiver). Then I played with some inputs and by trial and error I discovered that if I move a "video out" to a different plug then my VCR worked. This is also the TV source for my on-screen set up. So then I have to configure which video input goes with what audio input...vid 1 to analog audio, vid 2 to digital, vid 3 to coax, etc.

Agh!!!!!!

Ok...I'm feeling better now. I didn't test the DVD yet so wish me luck!!

Yes, of course, good luck. Connecting all those components is a challenge.:D

it is challenging the first time, but its a good learning experience, and it helps you understand how it all works a bit better.

Depending upon the receiver, you can assign certain inputs (usually digital) to what ever input you want. Make sure you are using the monitor out in order to get the on-screen display to work. On Denon receivers, if you are using HDMI, there will be no OSD until you activate the HDMI output (which must be done in the setup menu). You can do this either through the front panel (very confusing) or use a temporary composite video cable into the tv to get it activated.

I am not sure what receiver you have though.

Glad to see you got it working. Once you get down how it works it is pretty simple. The ease of use after the fact is the biggest benefit.

I have the Harmon Kardon AVR 146. Building my PC was easier than setting getting the receiver set up (thought it took longer), from the cables to assigning the buttons on the remote with the various a/v components, and the audio as well.

All is well now...Now where is that 50" plasma???

Organization is the key! The first thing I do is make labels to put on each end of the cables. My gear rack has a semi-enclosed back so space is tight, and it's dark in addition to being cramped. It's so much easier if you label stuff to keep it straight.

Congrats- it's a pain to connect a bunch of components to a modern HT rec!:D
