im getting the feeling that the SD version has more bass than the HD version.

will have to buy the SD version when it gets a bit cheaper.
I get the same feeling too.

I'm waiting for it to come out on blu-ray with TrueHD/LPCM/DTS-MA.

My HDDVD version was totally lame.

I'm thinking the SD DVD must have a better bass mix. I was quite impressed with it when I first heard it. Numerous scenes have a fair amount of impact.

yes, i have the HD DVD version, i recalibrated my subs (three at the time) to 11db hot just for this movie. practically no bass as compared to U571/FOTP/WOTW

i heard people saying the SD DVD was mixed hotter or something.

Here we go again, another useful post. Its easy to see how your post count got so high. Seriously sheep, stay on topic or move on to a thread where you can contribute something useful. Thanks!
My Original post WAS on topic. Your post and Jonnythan's post was where things started to go off topic.

On Topic: I don't think there is a difference in the mastering, I think the difference lies in the person watching it. Some were satisfied with the amount of bass in the film, others wanted more.

Unfortunately most the BD reviews I've seen mention that they had the exact same soundtrack as the HD DVD versions of the movie. That'd totally bite.

This would make me a very sad panda!:(

I watched the HD-DVD (DD+ I think) at a buddies house, and the DD mix on the SD-DVD is definately hotter in the bass department.

Sorry, I was a little vague. I meant BD reviews in general of movies that were released on both BD and HD DVD. Many times the reviewer would mention that a BD title under review seemed to have the exact pq and sq as the HD release of the same title did.

Jack:)

Is there really a difference? It's been mastered at the same place. Once source is digitally compressed and the other one is untouched. There shouldn't be any difference. SHOULD not.

I myself have the SD version
I don't think that's right. I believe Dolby TrueHD is uncompressed, but Dolby Digital Plus is compressed.

I have heard some compressed mixes that seemed to have more impact than their uncompressed counterparts, (i.e. the DD track vs. PCM on the Underworld BD). So I could totally understand some people reporting that the SD version seemed to have more bass than the HD. But I've got the HD version, and it indeed sounds pretty damn sweet.

I have the SD version as well-and during that scene, my sub just said "NO" to that note. I have no idea how low it got down to, but you could obviously tell there was a lot missing. Not that that's surprising, given my sub (see sig) at the moment. I'll accept donations in order to get a better one ;)

Technically, both are compressed (smalled than the original); only TrueHD is lossless, and DD+ is lossy.

What's the bandwidth difference between TrueHD and DD+? I think DD+ is around 1.5mb/sec?

If both the HDDVD & BD versions had the same or similar surround format (TrueHD vs TrueHD vs LPCM vs DTS-MA), then the sound would be the same.

But if the HDDVD were in DD+ and the BD were in TrueHD/DTS-MA/LPCM, then the sound may be different.

TrueHD is max @ 18 Mbps.
DTS-MA is max @ 24.5 Mbps.
LPCM is max @ 6 Mbps.

I believe the big difference is that LPCM is a FIXED rate, while TrueHD and DTS-MA are VARIABLE, which means they could go down to 1 Mbps @ anytime?

Yeah, that' right. Only LPCM is Uncompressed. TrueHD & DTS-MA are both Compressed. All three are Lossless.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do you compress something without losing any data?
Ever download a ZIP file? Use PNG graphics files? Convert a CD to FLAC?

All lossless compression.

Think of it as converting:

0000011111100000000

to:

5x0,6x1,8x0

Losslessly compressed 19 bits to 11.

Great example. This also is an example of why you need decoders and how they work. They take the compressed info and restore it to the original state based on set algorithms.
