Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me, it is just another black box.

It definitely does look nice, and under $300 it sounds like a nice option for HD users to experience True-HD and DTS-HD without breaking the bank. I might even look into it!

$4995 for the Samsung AVR3000? Geesh, competing now with the flagships of Denon and Yamaha. I won't hold my breath.

So for caparability its kind of inbetween the Onkyo 604 and 605 w/o 7.1.

604 - HDMI Pass through, 7.1
605- HDMI Upscaling, True-HD, 7.1

I kinda like it, but the knob sticks out too much.

It's nice looking, but not spectactular, but whatever trips your trigger. I like the looks of most of the recievers out there, but I would love to be able to change the amber display of my Yamaha RX-V659 to green or blue, I really have never liked amber/yellow displays much.

Look at this way - at least Yamaha hasn't yet succumbed to the 'me too' attitude so prevalent in the CE industry. A few years ago, HK added the stupid blue light around the volume knob and now practically every manufacturer does the same thing. Sharp TVs have it, my Creative computer speakers have a super bright LED, my favorite receiver brand (Onkyo) does it and on and on....

Amber is far easier on the eyes than super bright Neon Blue, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder for sure.

It does not support DTS-HD or Dolby Digital TrueHD.

I prefer the ability to turn off the display on all of my devices. So far, the Oppo is the only one I have that I can't do this on, but it is going to be replaced next week...

That is actually surprises me the 981 has that feature and it seems simple enough that it would be in the 970 as well.

It looks good, but I think both the Denon 4308 and Onkyo 805 look 100% better!
I bet the Denon and Onkyo will SOUND 100% better too.

The NEW Oppo :D

You would think so. Hopefully the 980 has this option, but at least it has the black/blue like the 981 so we'll see. I didn't mind the silver at all, but the amber display is distracting.
