ok let me explain first i buy a dvr works great then about 3 months later it went out it so they came out and first they replaced the multi switch didn't work so he gave me a new dvr still didn't work after that he replaced the lines and the lnb it worked :) he said lightning must of hit the dish. odd there was no marks on the dish ,but who cares. now one fateful day i am watching my tv then it goes blank and says searching for satellite signal. so i go out side in the freezing cold and check the lines and look at the dish (you know for lightning strikes ;)) it did look odd ,it was pointing in the wrong direction. i went back inside to find a compass climbed on my roof and realigned it and the lnb wasn't even screwed on right but my dvr still didn't work so i bypassed the multi switch my regular tuner worked but not my dvr. the next day they came out and replaced my multi switch every thing works great one day later it goes out he did not tighten any of the cables to the multi switch (what a bunch of geniuses the got working at directv ) now i sit hear with out my directv because the multi switch is guess what it's out well i bypassed the switch and used two coax couplers to hook up my dvr my regular will have to wait. i am going to call the brain trust sat. adn have them come out and FIX IT. so my long sad and FRUSTRATING story aside what is the deal with their multi switches i mean their all different brands (zinwell, aspen) what cant they take the cold (i live in Chicago) . pleas tell me and sorry for the long story :)

Did the installer properly ground your setup? I have heard that a poorly grounded system can fry multi switches left and right.

probably not i will have to check. but thanks i didn't think about grounding.

PS. I don't believe anyone actually works for "DirecTV" who does installs - it's independent installers subcontracted by corporate.

My directv has been up and running for 3 years now without a hitch. However, this isn't the first horror story I've heard.

Man, its all about the ability of the guy who shows up at your door, regardless of whether you are talking about satelite, cable or dishwasher repair !
I recently went through an amazing scenario with Time warner at my new house. The HD signal would breakup bigtime, my cable internet would fail etc. A whole year and three different modems later the story is comical.
At least 10 servicemen have been here with all kinds of gear. Eventually, I went down there to that fancy depot of theirs, yelling and screaming so bad that two service vehicles and four service guys beat me home! They measured everything and replaced the cable from the street underground and still no better !!
I went down there again and demanded their best technician. When he shows up, he is a pimple faced kid about 20 years old and I'm about ready to kick him out if he even trys to step inside my house - BUT - he figured it out!!!
There was a faulty $3 splitter inside an interior wall and together we dug into the wall and replaced it !

The right guy is hard to come by !!

When we got our new plasma set recently, we also switched from Dishnet to Directv. Even tho' Directv is cheaper, even tho' there is more HD programming, by far the best selling point is that Directv has a paused setting SCREENSAVER built-in to the DVR! I, and my plasma, love that. :D

Be sure it's grounded to your electric ground, not telephone, not cable, not aluminum siding, not to a frame rail (if you're in a trailer), only directly to electric!

Please be nice to the cable guys! You gotta let them in otherwise this is what happens. In most of todays new houses electricians run the cable lines and they do so as if it were electric by daisy chaining it and splitting it wherever it suits them (even if its inside a wall) and installing big 8-way splitters where only a 3-way or whatever is needed and not to mention how nasty the connections are when they make them, they have no idea what the hell they are doing. They may be the best electrician in town but have no idea how touchy todays cable tv is!
