I have the Infinity Primus P143 bookshelf speakers which have the MMD 4" woofer and 3/4" tweeter and have found with proper setup and good connections, they sound good and full. So I have them as the main speakers in media room system coupled to a Klipsch R-100SW. I only had a spare Polk TL1 center channel speaker but I wanted the timber on the front 3 channels to match. So I bought USED, off E-bay. I bought the matching center channel speaker the Infinity Primus PC251 speaker. I've only listened to it about 3 times previously and not critical.
Recently I sat down to critically listen to it and notice the right woofer had less midrange frequencies and was quieter than the left woofer. The right woofer was actually 4 decibels quiter.
These speakers are suppose to be 2-way at 3000Hz with a 24db/octave crossover.
Tested it and deemed a cap or resistor went bad in the crossover. So I pulled all the drivers out and the crossover to test everything. I even drew a schematic of the crossover circuit and found it not to a 2-way crossover as the woofers are not wired to the same components or even in parallel or series like other center channel speakers. I then thought I just drew the schematic wrong or it was a multi-layered PCB board with runs I couldn't see.
So I was limited on time and instead of trying to replace components which required finding which was bad by desoldering all the components to be tested individually, I decided to just buy another used speaker.
No more Infinity Primus PC251 speakers for sale but they had a handful of Infinity Primus C25 from 2 earlier generations of the Primus line. These speakers are the same, except for a piece of silver plastic added onto the front of the cabinet over the tweeter, and the shape of the grill. The components are all the same as even the crossover in the PC251 is labeled C25 on it.
So I just got the Primus C25 delivered which BTW is in much better shape than the PC251 that I had to add touch up paint on on the deep gouges on the cabinet. Now it looks good and they don't draw any attention but it took a bit of time to do it right and make it look good.
Now the C25 is hooked up and guess what, it does the exact same thing, right woofer and tweeter test at 92db and left woofer test at 96db just like the PC251. Plus the right woofer has less midrange frequencies in it as did the PC251.
So the PC251 wasn't defective! And now I have an extra center channel speaker! Why would Infinity do this, have the left speaker louder and more full range, than the right woofer. PLUS call it a 2-way 24db/octave crossover when it is not! It's more like a 2.5 or 3 way crossover with the left woofer dominating output which doesn't create a center image in-between the woofer but at the left woofer.
I wouldn't had believed this except to see it in these 2 center channel speakers. Luckily they weren't expensive and I learned of something that I would had never believed or expected.
Has anyone seen this before and why would Infinity give incorrect information about the crossover?
