I have a Pioneer VSX-5300 reciever and was looking on the back to see if it had a specific place to hook up a sub but it doesn't. I am looking at getting a $500 sub and am wondering if the sound will still be seperated with the sub getting the lower frequecies and my regular speakers getting the rest? I do not want to make the mistake of getting a sub and then realizing I can't hook it up to my reciever.

Yes it will if you get one with speaker level in / out connections with a crossover.

In this case you will have to run spkr wires from recv'r to sub and then spkr wires from sub to spkr's. A lot of spkr wiring. I believe this is your only choice other than the possibility that your receiver has pre-outs? If so you could preout to sub in and then from sub out back to recv'r in. Like you would a tape deck but not using the tapeloop but rather preout/ins. The sub must have rca in and outs to do this.
