OKYO TX-NR787 9.2 Channel AVR

Hi and thanks ahead of time for any input. I am considering this receiver for my home. It seems to be the least expensive AVR available with 9.2 channels. Currently it is at Best Buy for $649. I don't see anything bad about this except that the menus are rather low resolution. Does anybody have any experience with the AVR and if so what do you think of it? I would really like to go 5.1.4 if possible for under $700.

Thanks,
Daren

I have Phase Technology Velocity 12's for fronts with a matching Velocity V6 center. Surrounds will be Canton Plus X.2's. No ceiling mount yet but they will be coming...

I'd probably look at Denon or Marantz. Onkyos are notorious for failed HDMI boards for a few generations (not sure about current).

I started a thread on this AVR a good while back. Not sure if any of it would be helpful to the OP or not. As such, I decided to provide a link just in case:

https://forums.audioholics.com/forums/threads/onkyo-tx-nr787-9-2ch-avr-w-accueq-advance.111204/

Keep in mind that is is so new that there is very little feedback on it just yet. By all accounts it appears as though the new AccuEQ Advance is just a rehashed version of Pioneer's MCACC. Not sure if this is true or not, but have seen some mention of it over@AVS.

The dreadful HDMI boards issues seemed to have been resolved from what I garner. There is not a 9 CH AVR out there in your price range other than the Onkyo. If the OP decided to up his budget a bit, then he can get into either of these here:

I have been considering the Marantz and Denon offerings from A4L. I wish there was more information out there about the Onkyo. Really don't want to spend the extra money but may do it anyways.

@Darenwh I have owned many refurbished AVR's that I purchased from Acc4Less over the years. All w/o a hitch. They are great people to deal with. Highly recommend should you decide to go that route. However, like you I am also very curious about the Onkyo TX-NR787. Specs wise, it is very impressive inmho. Hence, it could be a game changer for Onkyo. Only time will tell.

Most hold exactly the same warranty as new, and are factory speced FWIW.

Now the selection gets more difficult. BB has an open box model for only 551... Very tempted to try this Onkyo radio. Suspect if I do I will get an extra year of warranty just in case... Problem is getting it will take until the 14th... That would be a very torturous week...

Yeah, for that price it would be hard for me to say no as well. Everything in life is about trade-offs. Darn if you do AND darn if you don't. The ole catch 22 happens a lot in this hobby. BB does have a 14-day return policy. As long as you can get it setup and try it out within the 14-days my vote is to give it a try. The short wait will just make it even better as hard as it is.:)

I had Onkyos TX NR 656 I did like it, I give it to my son it’s now over a year old he likes that unit a lot. I wanted a unit with pre amp outs. Got that unit from A4L for 299.00 Yamaha 7790 came in a factory Yamaha box could not find a scratch on it unit has perform flawlessly todate. Try the Onkyo, if I may make a suggestion, Crutchfield offers a 60 day return policy that should give you plenty of time to road test that unit to see if you like it.

I bought the RZ820 a couple of months ago. It's been fantastic. It made it seem as though I got all new speakers and subs the difference was so great from my old AVR which was a HK AVR 1600. And the Onkyo doesn't get hot.
