Ok,

Just hooked up the new DVR in the bedroom yesterday with the receiver (Older Kenwood VR615) got it all hooked up digitally (RAC type connector). Here is the problem, each time I change the channel on the digital cable box the receiver keeps switching audio formats and goes back to stereo. I switched the digital input from one to the other on the back of the receiver, even went to a fiber-optic toslink cable, it does it every time. Used to have this receiver hooked up in my living room and it never did this. I have went into the setup in the cable box and the receiver. If I make the receiver go to manual and I set the surround mode it will stay sometimes when I switch channels. But when I go to a non-surround channel it goes back to stereo and will stay there until I switch it back with the remote. I have gone around and around with this one and it is weird. I have verified that the cable box is NOT on stereo or "Optimal stereo" as it is on the audio menu. It is on "Matrix" and has been on every possible setting as far as the audio goes in the cable box. It still does this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try resetting the microprocessor in your receiver. Some units "remember" the initial dsp setting for certain channels, and label it as "preferred."

A little more help Buck!!

This is you very basic Kenwood receiver. I don't think that I can "Reset" the DSP. I do have the option of switching it from manual to auto but that is about it. I wonder if it is possible that there is something wrong with the Cable box doing this. When I had it hooked up to the other cable box it never did this and my 2500 in the LR does not do this either. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I am also going to call Comcast and see if they can't flash the cable boxes memory to see if they can stop it from doing this. Because when you think about it, the receiver works, it seems that the cable box is turning off and then back on the audio. Well it seems that way. The receiver works with the DVD and the PS2 no problem, it sees the digital audio and runs with it.

Like I said this is weird. Thanks for your help, and if you know how to "reset" the DSP please let me know. Thanks again Sir.

I have a couple of ideas:

1. If you have not done so already power cycle the cable box and receiver by unplugging (not just turning off) them for about a minute.

2. Make sure the receiver is set to "auto" for audio for that individual connection.

3. Instead of "matrix" set the defualt audio setting to "stereo" (not direct).

That's all of my ideas to try. Good luck.

Thanks Nick

Already tried all of that same thing happens. I have noticed tha if I set my receiver to Manual and not auto and I select the sorround format it will stay there, but I never had to do that before. Not to mention that I have to select this EVERY time I turn it all on, kind of a pain. I have an appointment with them on Tuesday night to replace the cable receiver. I guess I will see what the deal is then huh?

It seems more like a receiver issue to me. That being said try swaping cable boxes with the one from the LR one and see what happens in the LR and bedroom after the swap.

Have you checked the DVR/cable box menu for digital audio out settings? On my cable box there is an Audio:Digital setting and it can be set to either 'Dolby Digital' or 'Other'. 'Other' causes it to downmix 5.1 into 2 channel stereo and it sounds like your box is doing just that.

You said you were using a 'RAC' connection - I assume that was a typo and you meant a cable with an RCA connector. Is this ONE cable connected to the coaxial digital out of the DVR and a coaxial digital input on the receiver (and the receiver set to auto and that coax digital input assigned to whatever input on the receiver you are using)?

Have you called Kenwood? Does it have an internal battery to store settings?

I'm with MDS on this.
On my cable box, it has a setting within the menu for Dolby Digital or Stereo.
And on top of that, some of the channels are still in stereo, so make sure you know what channel is what.
If all else fails, call cable co. tech support.

Good luck.
