So I want to get into Home Theater sales like really bad but don’t really know how. I don’t really have any experience in HT sales except when I worked at Service Merchandise for a few months. I have a decent amount of knowledge but I think the lack of expericnce will kill me. Imp thinking of trying a Best Buy or Circuit City to gain some sales expericane. Also thinking Tweeter because I usually know more than the sales people there and it’s a lil higher end. I duno what do you all think. Any Ideas or Suggestions are VERY appreciated.

Thanks,
Sean

If you want to start a little higher on the food chain, find a Best Buy with a Magnolia store inside...or on the West coast, a Good Guys.

On the west coast, Magnolia has it's own stores separate from Best Buy. I don't understand why they also put them inside the stores too. It's more like a room than a "store". Magnolia used to be the west coast division of Tweeter, but Best Buy bought them a few years back. Good Guys also got bought out or merged with CompUSA, AFAIK.

IMO, try ALL of them. Go with the one that seems like they're actually going to help you out. I know Magnolia actually does training for their people, because I know a few guys that work there, but not all of them remember everything they're taught.

Magnolia or Tweeter would be good starting points. Also check for any additional high end retailers in your area. Showing an interest in doing it and going in to talk with the company is the first step. Go in and wow them. It may lead to a new job, or just open a door... start the foundation for a bridge.

I work at Circuit City (specifically in home audio) and it has really helped my sales experience. So much so that I got offered a job at Audio FX but I have more of a chance for moving up at CC than I did there, so I declined. I would personally start at a store like CC because it is non-comissioned sales, therefore there is less of a pressure on you to sell. Unfortunately, CC is still in the comission mind set and rides you about your sales, but if you do poorly a few days, it won't affect your paycheck. The one thing that will help you there is having any retail experience at all. Retail is a completely different world and any of you who work (or have worked) retail know what I'm talking about, so having some kind of experience there will also help, even though it may not be geared towards pushing sales. I worked at PetCo for two years selling dog food and hamsters, but CC only looked at the fact that I had worked in retail, not what my job description included. Having that kind of experience will really help and I can vouch for that. After being with CC for one week, I had already received two raises and a promotion to selling home audio, which is my favorite! Plus I enjoy helping other people and making sure that they get what they need to have a decent system for a good price! Oh and I get a good discount on all my loot. Which is handy for a poor college kid like me!

Were you looking for full time or part time?

Benefits matter and I don't just mean the regular benefits!!!!

The ability to buy items from the manufacturers at a heavily discounted price can help you build that system. I used to work part-time for "Incredible Universe" (long gone Tandy company) just to buy items at cost from the manufacturers. Spent ten times more than I earned.
