I took the plunge yesterday and bought a bluray player, got the sony bdp-s550. Found a good price on it and was like what the heck. My receiver doesn't accept audio over HDMI so I get the joy of tweaking and tuning with the analog outs, that is after I get done with all of my Organic HW.

I made the jump a couple of weeks ago and it's pretty impressive. It shouldn't be too hard to setup. Let us know what you think when you get a few movies. I know to me it looks and sounds better. I can't wait to get my new speakers setup and hear everything again.

Enjoy the new toy. I'm sure you will.

Congrats on going blu. I've been hoping for the prices to drop on blu-ray discs, but so far the price has stayed up there. I wonder what the long term viability is going to be if disc prices don't come down.

Congrats on the new toy!

BTW, is that organic chemistry, or is there actually homework on organic food now? :)

"Oh, crap. I have to wolf down an organic banana and grapes before class tomorrow."

I think we still have a little while to go before we start to see the prices on discs start to go down yet. The studios had to buy all new equipment to make the the discs unlike HDDVD which reused the DVD presses for the most part. They are going to want to get some money out of them before they lower prices. As it is you can still get some pretty good deals on discs, a lot in the mid teens, if you look around. Amazon is always running specials just depends on what's on sale.

I wished it were just eating organic food lol, I would be more than happy to eat my least favorite. I am finishing up Organic chemisty 2 this semester. After 30 some hours of chemistry I will finally be done. I actually like it but I'll be glad to finish up.

Now the question is do I sell my Panasonic upconverting DVD player or should I keep it around to send the regular bitstream dolby digital over to the receiver so I can use my Audyssey settings?

The 550 can't send a Dolby Digital bitstream? Just asking. I'd think that it could do that, as long as it was on the disc. I'd actually expect it to be able to convert a Dolby TrueHD track to Dolby Digital - but I don't know if players do that. (I don't have one yet...can you tell? :))

Yes it does, but the Sony is hooked up via the analog outs and it decodes all formats but the problem is my receiver doesn't apply any of the audyssey settings to the 7.1 analog in. I think it sounds pretty good as is, but I feel like I could be gaining something by letting the receiver decode regular old dolby digital or dts. I would also have to switch the output modes on the sony back and forth which wouldn't be a problem for me, but my wife is another story. I do think the video quality of DVD's is much better with the Sony than the panasonic, so I may have just answered my own question.

so I may have just answered my own question.
I'd think so, if you're right about the comparison.

FWIW, I'm using the entry Netflix program, and that's $5.99 for two titles a month, one at a time. I've got Milk, Slumdog, and Gran Turino in the queue for now.

Oh, almost forgot, congrats! ;) If you are impressed as I am, you might not even watch DVD anymore. I haven't since '07, but part of that is due to a PJ setup.

My wife's work place has a library that let's you check out DVDs for FREE. She asked me last Friday if I wanted to check out any DVDs from the library.

I laughed and said, "DVDs? What's that? I only watch blu-rays now, babe.":D

I would like to but they are still a little expensive for me right at the moment. The good thing is the player I bought came with 5 so that helps me start the collection. At Family video they rent for $3.49 a nite vs. 2.29 for a DVD, I know what I will be renting these days. :)

I guess I should get back into Netflix again...I've been buying bluray discs from Amazon and they are probably the most reasonable priced I've found.

Yeah, I did the Amazon blu-ray buying for about a year. But I've stopped that and done Netflix blu-ray renting for 3 months now.

I just don't see the point of owning most of these blu-rays anyway because I have no intention of rewatching most of these movies.:D

Well, I do enjoy watching some of them again. I've bought my share of movies though that were, to put it nicely...forgettable. I think I canceled Netflix because we had the unlimited package and were only watching a movie a month. Maybe the minimum package is what I should look at.
