Observation just made

Many times in the past and me included, statements were made not to purchase speakers fro m companies who also made electronics. Now I'm seeing endorsements made for Emotiva and Axiom (although Axiom did started first designing speakers). Speakers being made by companies such as Yamaha have been put down becuase its not a real speaker company. And who would think that Home Theater Magazine would recommend Pioneer's Megabuck speakers for high end systems?

Just an observation made. ;)

just shows that "common wisdom" can often be "mis-information served as urban myths". There is absolutely no reason an electronics manufacturer can not make great speakers, it is just a matter if they have the desire to do so. Yamaha makes great electronics, and their high end speakers are probably as good as any.....it may have more to do with lack of advertising and, shall I say, lack of "fluffing the nest of audio reviewers" ;) that keep them out of sight for most.

Sometimes the exceptions to the rule make us want to look at changing the rule. In general, I would still stay away from Yamaha, or others at lower price points.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with buying speakers from a company that started in electronics...

..but magazines are completely rubbish. Electronics companies are the ones that can afford to advertise and buy articles (yeah, that happends, just it gets paid for in indirect ways) right now.

Magazines are entertainment, that's it. You might get some good things to look for or ask about, but your not going to get a true story.

It's almost as bogus as wine spectator ratings.

Yamaha offers surprising value for their speakers I have found.

I agree with all who have posted on this thread. But I wanted to take issue with one point here. In two comparos we've done (one just yesterday), including blind A/B testing against many challengers, Yamaha consistently whipped everything in its price class (and beyond) with its inexpensive but clean sounding loudspeakers. I'm not, nor ever have been, a Yamaha speaker fan. But the things speak for themselves. If one doesn't want to spend many thousands on an HT or music setup, I would recommend Yamaha speakers without hesitation.

It has surprised me and tore away a little Tomorrow bias. So yeah, a/v equipment manufacturers can make good/competitive loudspeakers.

I agree with you on most of what you say here but I also see lots of adds by speaker companies such as PSB, B&W, Paradigm and so many more that can afford to avertise as well. ;)

IMO most companies, I am not saying all want to cash in under their brand name and they don't manufacure their own products that's why people are hesitante. That does'nt make them a bad product. I have a pair of Yamaha bookshelves for many years and for the money I think they sound great.

There are always exceptions to the "general rule". And an average is made up of highs and lows.

Well now, thats interesting. I remember once reading a review of one of the B&W 800 series speakers that studios use (the 'spensive ones) and the reviewer commented how the B&Ws were a little better than his favourite pro studio speaker, some Yamaha.

You just never know until you listen.

Well, that is good in a good sense:D
Now you really see the need to control bias, even with speakers, or especially with speakers:D Or, whatever;)

While I am not familiar with their speakers, it sounds like a good purchase for folks not that critical and don't want to spend a lot.

I always thought the operative advice from this site was to listen to as many speakers as possible before making a decision. That should include speakers from any company regardless of whatever else they might produce.
