im looking forward to an upgrade of sorts, and lets say i'm trying to spend the least... my yamaha amp is 8 yrs old (RX-V795a, as reliable as they come), so is my pioneer DV-535. and i am using a CRT as my monitor. i want THAT out, 'nuff waiting. but on gettting a plasma/LCD wud i HAVE to change my amp too ? can or cant i plug the dvdplayer straight to the monitor thru an HDMI cable or is it only better to have it done thru the amp ?

You can certainly plug video (and audio, but not my recommendation) straight from a source component to a monitor. A number of people here do exactly that. You would want to run the audio signal (preferably digital audio from a DVD player) straight to the receiver.

The only extra step is that you would need to choose the video input on the TV and the audio input on the receiver (two steps) instead of just switching the source on the receiver (one step). You can get programmable remotes that would do it all in one step, though.

I have a Yamaha receiver which I bought a couple of years ago and it doesn’t have HDMI connections. I run the HDMI sources through a monoprice.com 4-input switch and then on to the HDTV (only one HDMI input). I run digital optical cables from each source to the receiver for sound processing. The best I can do with this setup is Dolby Digital 5.1 processing. I am guessing you could do the same if you want to do it.

no sync prob;ems between audio and video

i shudnt be worrying about any lip sync or effects misco-ordination with the the video signal or any dip in quality with a 4-in-1 switcher ?

I have a terk 4-1 switch and have had no issues with sync at all. If the switch is working correctly, it shouldn't impede the signal.
