Interesting Journal Article by DarqueKnight over at Polk Audio.

The paper is written partially to assess the validity ABX (discrimination) testing while also offering a more acceptable method.

Read on...

The article will be published in JOSS (Journal of Sensory Studies).

His efforts are due to the cable naysayers (power, speaker level, and IC).

Don't see any discussion of statistical analysis. Without this, such descriptions are without meaning. Subjective descriptions can be, well subjective unless scored on a scale and evaluated after proper number of trials to see how well the components are scored consistently. Also, no mention of double blinding; how well is that operator isolated from the subject? A curtain is not enough.

I didn't see mention of evidence why ABX is flawed. Perhaps his is flawed. How is his test not forced choice? After all, the subject has to make a subjective evaluation to count, no? Don't get a pass for not answering. Forced choice.
I wonder if that sensory journal know anything about audio evaluation.

Plenty of peer reviewed papers, in audio, that have used forced choice methods not involving components but basic research such as JNDs.

Lots of peer revied papers turn out to be junk in the end. One only needs to look at some medical stuff, or that prayer paper by Harvard professor/s.

Full Audioholic
Here is the problem I see...."Formal descriptive analysis would require evaluative panel members with training in descriptive techniques, adequate hearing ability"...

If we wanted a panel to discuss political events, should they be trained at Berkeley or Liberty University? There is quite a difference there with the "trained" people having different biases because they were instructed by those with similar biases.

I prefer the Audioholics method with both the "public" and "experts" involved... the experts have valuable knowledge to add and the public buys the stuff and much of the time does a good job of finding the good "stuff" without any expert help (setting aside Bose). If you want to limit speaker testing to the analytical, just do lab tests and email the results...

New guy here!

Hi Folk,

I'm new here although I've lurked for a few years. I'm a regular on the Polk Audio forums.

It was nice of jinjuku to post the thread from Club Polk about the "Notice of Sensory Science Journal Publication.

I've read your replys to jinjuku's OP and what I would like to say is, please reserve judgement on the paper and it's contents until you've at least read it and tried his method.

Here is a link answering a question posed by one of the replyers here;

Sorry I can't post a link yet as I don't have five posts but if you go to the Polk Audio forum and do an advanced search on DarqueKnight look for the thread entitled, "Questions Regarding Power Cable ABX Test."

It's interesting to say the least and gives one something to think about. One of the things that differ between the ABX test in the link and the method described in DarqueKnight's method is a realistic, comfortable and typical listening environment (one such as you have at home) as well as giving a single test subject (there can be many but only one at a time) time to listen to music for a longer period of time and logging their observations. No presure no built in 50 - 50% error rate.

As far as "training" a listener is concerned, you will have to read the paper to get a better understaning of what his concept is.

I think you will find this method eyeopening and substantial.

Cheers,

Joe:)

BTW; jinjuku I find it very interesting that you are a moderator here. It explains a lot. That is not meant to be inflammatory in any way, shape or form.
