Noob subwoofer question

i have a Logitech X-530 set of computer speakers, and my friend recently bought the logitech X-540, and the only real difference i noticed was the subwoofer, instead of being mounted on the side of the box (like mine) it was mounted on the bottom of the box. i was just wondering does the direction of the subwoofer affect the sound?

all the car subwoofer boxes ive build, ive always build them with the speaker facing up (for hatch back like cars) or for them to face forward (in trucks) but ive never noticed much difference in the direction the sub faces in a car (im assuming its because a car is much smaller then a room and you dont have enough space to notice it)

any way im just looking to learn some thing, hopefully some one can set me strait, thanks guys

Acoustic differences are probably nill. However it is the appearance that affects why subwoofer designers do what they do. In the case of downfiring subs it covers many grounds. They are generally cheaper to assemble, no grills to make, and they don't have an exposed woofer that can be easily touched or toyed with.

For car audio it is not as space efficient to have a down firing sub, because it would require feet, making the enclosure needlessly taller than it would be if it was front firing. Also, everybody wants to see those woofers move in car stereo.

ah, that would make sence, because now that you mention that, mine does have a big metal grill on the side covering the sub where his is plainly exposed on the bottom, and it also seemed like his subwoofer box was smaller then mine, it would make sense if they were trying to cut down the cost on an already cheap product, and as far as car subwoofers, of course you want to watch them, for some odd reason its amusing watching a set of large speakers bump in sync to music the only problem with car audio, is that it makes you go def, thank god i figured that out while im still young, and in reality i still dont understand why they make over 500 watt subs, because in my hatch back even my 150 rms watt rockford fosgate P1 shook the seats and gave you a nice back masage

It isn't all in the watts. That is one very important thing to learn.

ill remember that , i was just very impressed with what a 60$ base line RF sub could do in my car, the only reason why i sold my RF And got an infinity was to hopefully improve on sound quality

I really like the Infinity subs, at least the ones before the current models. I haven't listened to the newer ones, I just am not into car audio so much. More often than not I don't even use the radio in my car. The car I had before this one didn't even have a radio. LOL

yeah, accually in my daily driver (i drive a old beater because school parking lots dont work well with nicer cars) i have just a crappy cd player with 4 best buy speakers or some bs like that, and in reality i dont listen to the stereo a lot on my daily commute. However i have a older foxbody mustang that i have the good stereo in, and the main reason i listen to more music in that car vs my daily driver, is the sound of my exhaust pipes (dual 2 1/2" into 4" echo pipes with flowmaster mufflers) gets annoying some times and music is the easiest way to kill the exhaust noise..

What is the point of having all that aftermarket exaust parts if you drown the sound out by playing loud music?

to add a wow factor to your car, make people guess whats special about the engine under the hood (kind of pointless however mildly entertaining) if you hear some one take off from a stop light and rev it on up to 6 before slaping it into second and you hear a awesom roar comming down the road, you know your going to look only problem is, that kinda stuff gets you in trouble with the cops

I'll second that. I always think... "You know, you really should get your muffler fixed." I never think "Wow! That's so cool."

Noisy cars scream POS to me. That, and one note bass cars... what's up with that?
