Noob Question on Technics SL-15..

I was cleaning out some stuff the other day and found a few electronics in a box. Long story short I dont have any use for this and can not find ANYTHING online to help establish an asking price for it. It is MINT condition with no scratches on the lid or blemishes in the color (which is silver). Powers on and plays properly as it should.

Some guidance here would be fanstasic...thanks.

Or you could just put it on ebay with no reserve, I seem to remember those things fetching quite a bit.

The linear trackers from Technics overall were not that popular; certainly not when compared to their normal type turn tables with conventional swing arms. The SL-10 and Sl-15 being the two most sought after linear trackers made by Technics. If it was in mint condition AND had a new like condition original Technics cartridge - which is extreme unlikely - then it might get a good price on eBay; $200, maybe more, might be possible. But you pretty much have to have the original table AND cartridge in MINT condition(you have to have a technician inspect the needle tip with a microscope to determine stylus condition fully), as this goes best as a set - especially due to the lack of realy high quality P-Mount carts today(all the good stuff is 1/2" standard mount these days). Lacking the mint condition original cart? It's value is going to wildly fluctuate. $25? $100? Either one is possible with the lower number being more likely...

Let me ask you: does this one have all aluminum/metal body or is plastic? If it's aluminium and in excellent cosmetic condition and it works/plays -- I'll make you an offer as I want to collect some old unique late 70's-mid 80's turntables. But I'm not looking to pay much - this is just a new kind of side hobby where I want to collect some of the most notable tables from that era.

to be honest I am not sure if it is metal or not..weights quite abit and is either a REALLY hard plastic or alluminum casing. cosmetics is fantastic, unit belong to my grandfather who passed away 14-15 yrs. My parents got it out of storage 3 years ago and used it occasionally.

Before I commit to a price to sell this thing, I want to make sure I know what value it may hold. I will keep your PM saved and let you know.

They were never a well thought if turntable. They would not be a prime turntable for use. It is basically a collector curio item. My valuation is $125 tops.

I'm not interested in that turntable, but I have confidence that my estimate is fair.

For valuable vintage turntables, you have to get to the goos stuff, like Garrard 301 and 401, Thorens, Goldring Lenco, Perpetuum Ebner, Sugden and turntables of that nature.

There are better tables for actual use, and cheaper....

Technics SL-Q2, SL-Q3, SL-1300MKII, SL-1400MKII are some examples that won't fetch much on eBay, but are very high quality(far superior to so-called entry level tables like Regas, Pro-Jects, etc. in the entery level range) and can use a regular 1/2" mount cartridge - which opens you up to the Denon Dl-110 -a fine quality cartrdige that is well beyond the quality of virtulaly anything else it's price range, and in fact, just about as good as you will get if teh intent is accurate/neutral playback, low distortion and superb tracking.

My only purpose for the table from the OP is for collecting, which is it's ideal capacity considering....

So..found out alot of things today. First the catridige is original and with the exception of the tonearm all works well. The tonearm does not move in or out. After research online I have taken the cover apart and am going to replace the caps.

this is a problem that I have found to be common (since this machine is near or is 27 years old).

Will be replacing those tomorrow and hopefully that will correct the issues.

Anyone know how to disconnect the two plugs on the back of the board on the SL-15 to gain access to the capasitors?

I'm not sure myself, but I believe you can view a copy of the service manual on the web.

This forum won't let me copy in a web address, but if you google "technics sl-15 service manual" you'll come up with some sites. One that I viewed was at "diyaudio.com".
