Noise from surrounds

I just noticed a low level static type noise that does not change with the volume, source, surround mode or if the surrounds are set to NONE in speaker set up. It only goes away when I turn off the receiver. If I play with the channel adjustments the volume of the source goes up and down but the under lying hum remains the same.

A few weeks ago I noticed a low level pop from the surrounds when the receiver switched surround modes. (Going from 5.1 DD program to a 2 channel DD commercial.) I just noticed the hum when I went to hook up a different set of speakers. The hum is there regardless of which speakers are hooked up.

My gear is listed in my sig. Right now I am going to turn off my computer as it is on the same circuit. Then I am going to unplug my AV gear for 5 minutes and finally I will reset the receiver's processor which will erase everything and return the system to its factory settings. I'll check for the hum to go away in between steps. So far I've pretty much unplugged everything remotely close to the system. I'll be back in 15 minutes looking for the real cure after I eliminate all of the above. TIA.

are your components grounded?

since the volume settings don't affect this, I'd say it's the residual noise in the power amp stage of your receiver. All amps produce this to some level or another.

If you have to go out of your way to hear it, I wouldn't worry about it. In this hobby, if you look hard enough for imprefections, you'll surely find some. Enjoy the illusion of perfection. you'll be better off.

I guess. They don't all have the ground plug. Just the twp prong jobs from the factory but everything is plugged into one of those Monster monstrosities and I have checked my outlets with a circuit tester. In the real world I'm a bit of a freak like that. Around here I'm just a low level enthusiast. :)

I think you're right. Man, I unplugged everything, (except the sub but you can rest assured that that is next) including my little rat shack antenna and disconnected every speaker to look for whiskers, all for naught. Is this the noise part of signal to noise ratio? Just like you said Mark, I have to go way out of my way to hear it, right up to it with the grill off and my ear up against it. Not to mention precariously perched on the end of the couch. What a schmuck, right? Now my TV is on the dinning room table but that's okay as UPS just delivered the balance of my speaker upgrade.

Thanks guys,
Alex :)

Yep, I'd say that qualifies as going out of your way looking for trouble. :D

Not really. It's part of the learning process. We've all been there, but when I was going through that, it was a little more difficult to get answers. There was no internet in the early 60's. ;)

It's probably okay to plug my water cooler back in then, huh? :D

Yeah, this is a good place. :)

Hi Alex, it sounds like Mark has you on the right track.
If you still have the manual for your receiver, check the specs
for the front amp vs. the rear surround amp.
Sometimes the signal to noise ratio isn't as good for the rear.
Just a thought.
And plug the water cooler back in.:D

I had the same problem. I purchased a set of fans with thermistat put it on the top to keep the reciever cool and it stopped.

Well, I don't know. Is it properly wired? :D Wouldn't want you to get in trouble mixing water and electricity. :D

Got the water cooler plugged into the switched outlet on the back of the H/K. :D Why, where do you plug yours in?:)

That's a joke, okay?
