No Sound With HDMI Pass Through

Hello,

My Onkyo 809 will pass video but no audio with HDMI pass through, it worked fine and one day this. I checked and replaced all cables and connected directly to TV with my different sources and they were all OK. Any suggestions, it's not really a big deal but I like to play video games with PS3 sometimes without turning on receiver and my amps. Would a reset help, if so how do I do that? Sorry for the simple question.

Hi, Jeff. After skimming the manual, nothing obvious stood out. Some questions:
1. Do you have this issue with anything other than the PS3? I'm wondering if a PS3 software update modified your PS3 audio output settings (or maybe you did that), and it's now incompatible with your TV (unless you change those settings back).
2. The HMDI THRU wasn't turned "Off," was it? I'm assuming that it wasn't because you still get video, but I figure it's worth asking.

To reset the Onkyo, check out page 79 of your owner's manual:

To reset the AV receiver to its factory defaults, turn
it on and, while holding down VCR/DVR, press
ON/STANDBY. “Clear” will appear on the display
and the AV receiver will enter standby mode.

In HDMI pass through mode the HDMI board is on and very much active, drawing current even when not being used.

If this is not due to an inadvertent setting change as Adam suggests, I would bet this is the beginning of a progressive failure of the HDMI board.

If this receiver is under warranty, the HDMI board should be replaced.

Thanks Adam, I tried the BD player and the same thing, Onkyo suggested I do power cycle and if that does not help, do a reset as you said.

Adam, I did the power recycle thing per Onkyo's advice, powered down unit and unplugged it for 5 minutes and replugged, it now is working Go figure, I didn't have to do reset. I was already considering to call Onkyo for warranty service for HDMI board repacement, I'm so pessimistic Thank you for taking the time to post you thoughts and suggestions.
