You don't follow them much so not a surprise. Yes, some avrs can turn off amps when used as pre-amp.....not a lot, tho.

Where have you been? Denon has implemented that feature for like 5 years now.

With my AVR-3700, the amps are not actually turned off but only their inputs are disconnected. It's too bad that this AVR is not more energy efficient.

Thanks for pointing that out. I don't follow that specific topic closely but I would assume how your Denon behaves is the same for all Denons with this feature.

If they were to instead design a " full/maximum energy efficiency " version as you quite reasonably suggested there would be a problem in that if a consumer later decided to switch the amp section back on there would need to be a 4 to 5 second muted delay, "warm up", before the sound successfully emerged [just like all of us are used to when we power up an AVR] and some consumers would be thrown by that ~5 second delay and assume something was "wrong", hence run to call their dealer/CSR.

I don't use AVRs and never will. But I can't find any data that any receiver switches off the power amps, but disconnects inputs to the power amps. This would make sense as receivers have regulated power supplies and switching off the amps would be too great a current change for regulation to cope with most likely. So you would need a power supply for the amps and another for the preamp/processor stage.

Work back from the speaker outputs and see if you can identify the speaker relay. The problem is, that these units are thrown together, and quality of construction usually leaves a lot to be desired. That is why these units are generally unfixable and are basically a disgrace.

I down loaded the maintenance manual it’s too big to send you but is available on Denon AVRX7200W avr.sm.pfdf in tracing the circuit back from the buffer I could not find any relays .

In that case that unit must have a solid state relay and not a mechanical one with contacts. So the outlook for getting that unit up and running is remote.

I went sniffing around for prices on used units and found this:

~$350 - $450

Units listed for parts or not working, often with known defects like a broken amplifier board.

I guess it happens often enough. I can just see Mark waving that shillelagh screaming, "What have I been telling you, you fools! Now go clean your ears!" I would f^%&ing cry if my amp board fried.

I still haven't hear the OP say he went into the manual set up and made sure he hadn't turned his amps off or listed the speakers as 'None" in the Speaker Configuration part. I almost feel like PENG could wave a magic wand from Canada and just fix it if he was so inclined.

OP, I'm pullin' for ya! I'd love to hear that you got it to work somehow.
