no sound on the oppo

I just bought an oppo 970 and I can't get the sound to work. I admit that it is probably user error, but I have tried everything that the manual says in order to fix the problem.

My first thought is that it was a connection problem. So I setup my old dvd player and played a movie, the sound worked. Then I unplugged the red and white from that player and plugged it into the 'mixed' signal on the oppo. no sound. I know everything else in the system is set correctly because the old player was working.

Has anyone else had this problem? what is the likely solution?


I have checked:
- mute
- player volume
- the 'stereo' vs. 5.1 channel settings
- all the remote buttons
- all functions in the audio setup menus

I talked with the tech guy at oppo and they are replacing the unit.

they pay shipping both ways,

Yeah, I believe so. I had a conversation with their tech guy and when I explained how I had it setup he said its must be the unit, so they are replacing it.

The replacement player came in the mail a couple weeks ago. works great!

As a total layman on video stuff, I would not say that it the new player is night and day better than a regular dvd player, but it is definatly less grainy. It does not have the 'wow' that true HD has, but it looks good to me.
