No sound from Xbox 360 all of a sudden; Onkyo AV

Hey guys.

So I have the Onkyo HT-S7100 with the TX SR606 receiver for clarification. Had it working fine as of yeterday with my PS3, my cable box and my 360. They were assigned to different inputs on the reciever like DVD and Game/TV. The PS3 is connected via HMDI IN and the 360 was component.

Then my brother came home from school and plugged his PS3 into the HDMI port that corresponded to the 360's component port (both DVD).

Now my bros PS3 works fine in the DVD port but now my 360 gets video but no audio. I plugged his PS3 into the VCR port to avoid conflict but still nothing.

Btw I'm completely new to surround systems and recievers I had a friend hook mine up.

I tried taking out the 360 cables and put them back in too. He also seemed to have played with the remote too.

Any help?

Welcome to the forum!

Check out the digital audio input selection in your owner's manual (pages 43 and 44 if it's the same one as the one online at Onkyo). On page 43, it states:

When an HDMI IN is assigned to an input selector as
explained here, the digital audio input for that input
selector is automatically set to the same HDMI IN.
See “Digital Input Setup” on page 44.

I read that as meaning that the HDMI input overrode your previous assignment of (I'm guessing) the optical digital input for the "DVD" input that you were using for the 360. I'd recommend going in and resetting that.

If you would, let us know if that does it. Thanks!

Wait, can I not get all speaker surround sound using the audio cables with the 360? I just get sound out of the front left and right speakers.

I can't even remember if it's always been like this LOL.

I saw something about the NXE upgrade causing audio problems with HDMI. You may want to check out some gaming sites for details if this is the problem.

I have it hooked up via component not HDMI yet. The problem is I can't understand where to plug the audio cables now. The video cables are fine but the only ports that give me sound are under the DVD area but that's only Front Left and Right speakers, not the entire system.

I have no idea how it was hooked up when my friend hooked it up my brothers moved stuff around.

The component plug also has a jack to run an optical link to your receiver. If you aren't using HDMI, the optical connection is the next best. You'll be able to get full Dolby Digital as opposed to the older Dolby surround that is encoded in the stereo connection.
