Hi '
I moved to a new house and set my harmon kardon 1710 up
I cant get any sound from my rear speakers when in dolby digital
I do have sound in prologic mode
I always could in my other house lol
I have tried every setting and made sure the the rears are set to rear surround and not to zone 2
I have called harmon as well and they cant figure it out
I think i have a setting wrong but cant seem to find it
Can anyone help
Thanks

Are you playng a source that actually has any rear channel information.

Two channel sources don't, and ALL CD's, phono, and radio are two channel. That would explain the apparant contradiction in the two bolded statements. DPL "fudges" fake rear channels from two channel sources.

If that's not the case. H/K will be your best bet.

What were you playing in the previous house and which setting were you using?

In the current situation, if you're getting any sound from the rear surrounds, they are at least hooked up. Did the auto setup correctly identify them?

Play a Bluray that is 7.1 encoded. That way you'll be sure the rear surrounds should have signal sent to them.

i use to use the auto set mode and had sound from all speakers whether i was watching a movie or tv
when the amp detected a surround channel it would switch to dolby digital if not it would go to dolby prologic movie mode and play sound from all speakers
i realize its just decoding the surrround to the rear speakers
But now i can only get sound by using the pro logic movie mode no sound when using the auto mode for tv or dvd player
does that make sense
thanks for your help

Yes, it does make sense. When you use the auto mode it will default to the highest qualty possible decoding for the signal type it's being fed, which would probably be DD for a digital input. Also, keep in mindt hat DD doesn'tautomatically mean "sound in all channels all the time".

If you want the lower quality DPL which will force stuff from all speakers, then you have to select it. Odds are it goes to DPL when you feed it an analog signal, right? Analog doesn't support DD.

Since you say this only happened after your move, recheck your setup. you may have changed some setting during the move.

also, your wording is a bit difficult to follow so I was just guessing as to what you meant.

TV is DD5.1 and DVD is DD5.1 DTS 6.1 max. Are you sure in the previous place you were getting 7.1 speakers playing in "standard" Dolby Digital setting?

IMHO, if you have 7.1 speakers, might as well upgrade that DVD player to a Bluray player use HDMI cable and get true 7.1 sound.
