3 weeks ago I bought Denon AVR 3310CI and currently waiting on speakers and sub to come.

I went ahead and connected my DISH network DVR/SAT box via HDMI to receiver HDMI input and have connected another HDMI cable from the HDMI out of the receiver going to tv's input (SONY XBR5).

From the television speakers I can listen audio on HD channels but there is no audio coming out for other channels (non-HD such as 720p/480p) . I went through all screens of audio set up and cant seem to get what the issue is.

Plz let me know if you have any suggestions.

DISH DVR MODEL # DVR VIP722k
AVR # DENON 3310CI
TV # SONY XBR5

Thanks AvRat. I had the same settings but no luck.

Audio Out - TV
HDMI Control - Off

I sent an email to Denon and have yet to hear. Don't know how their customer service is, will keep this thread posted.

What speakers do you haveconnected ?

 You say you are waiting on speakers and sub to come in. Are you telling me you have ONLY surrounds and center hooked up? HD on DishNetwork comes in at Dolby 5.1 which may be driving your surrounds and center. whereas the standard comes only in 2.0 and if you don't have anything connected to the fronts then no sound. you might want to temporarily hook up your surrounds to your front channels.

Good Luck!

At the moment I have no speakers (no front surrounds, no center, no back surrounds). Hence the audio is being played out of TV speakers.

DVR out -> HDMI -> AVR HDMI in
AVR out -> HDMI > TV in

Have you consiered that the cable box might be the culprit? It may not output non-digital audio through HDMI.

Hey' it's worth a look, isn't it?

The Answer : Set "Audio Out = TV"

At the moment I have no speakers (no front surrounds, no center, no back surrounds). Hence the audio is being played out of TV speakers.

DVR out -> HDMI -> AVR HDMI in
AVR out -> HDMI > TV in

Normally you go to the AVR to have the sound diverted to the speakers connected to the AVR andno sound is passed through to the "TV in".

Check you AVR and make sure the option to pass audio through to HDMI is set as expalined following:

Here is your owner's manual : http://www.usa.denon.com/AVR-3310CI-OM-E_003A.pdf

Look on page 39 - the section "Making HDMI Settings (HDMI Setup) "

make sure Audio Out = "TV". later, when you have your speakers connected, set it too Audio Out= "AMP" This is proabalby how it is set now.

Good Luck and Good Sound!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I feel that i have by-hearted page 36 - 39 of Denon owner's manual. So quick update on where I'm.

I called up Dish Network tech support and they passed on the buck to say its AMP problem because the audio plays for both HD and non-HD if the HDMI cable is routed from settop box to TV directly.

Now its turn to talk to Denon, so denon cust.service passed it on to settop box to be at fault and did go into some nitty gritty such as HDCP handshake seems to be failing etc. and to call back Dish N/W.

Called Dish N/W, tried all sorts of trouble shooting and the tech guys gave up and are sending a new reciever. There will be a technician as well, so hoping this thing will get sorted in person then.

I have checked every possible concievable thing but no luck. Will update again once have something relevant. Thanks again.
