When asked Toshiba said that the port was both optical and coax. Is this possiable? I thought that it was one or the other.

No, it's not possible. If the jack on the soundcard is round (either a tiny 3.5 mm or the larger type on your receiver) it is coaxial; if it is square, it is optical.

Toshiba 2nd tier customer support finally called back today and they said that it was a optical port. Hopefully the optical adapter that I ordered from amazon will work.

Sucks that it is taking so much pain to get your sound going. Keep us posted on how things turn out.

Thanks for your help agarwalro. When I get the adapter from amazon I will let you know if it works. Hopefully it will get here before the weekend. It seems pretty cheap @ $1.50 though. Shipping was about $5.00.

Hello everybody!!!

Feeling great being with all of u.
I have music & movie in my blood. I m just mad to it.

So far i used some chiep AV staff. I want to start a good-quality & powerfull HT. But I have budget constrain. So I cant try different brand so easily. I have to hit the bull at once.

After so much study I have selected speaker from Paradigm family. New Monitor-7(V5)as front, CC-290 as centre, ADP-390 as surround and PDR-12 Sub. Still I haven't bought them. Though i was fan of Klipsch but its not available here. What do u think about my speakre???????

The main issue is with the AV receiver. I want full blust keeping enough power reserve. I got good deal with Denon & Yamaha here. I dont want Power drop during 5/7 channel playing togather. (Though Onkyo, Pioneer also available here). Sales manager from all brands tell good about there own AV Rx. Confused with Denon & Yamaha. I can sacrifice Features, Design, Easy Handlig (Even HDMI) BUT not with Power. Pl help me.

Pl help me.
My first suggestion is that you start a new thread for this subject. You will get much better advice for your concerns than starting a post on the third page of an unrelated topic.

I've never, ever seen a digital coax port built into a headphone port.

However, optical ports built into headphone ports are quite common and this is what you have.

You need a Toslink to Mini plug cable. You mention an adapter, but I'm not sure what kind of adapter you're talking about.

You need to plug the laptop into the OPTICAL port of the receiver. This is the type of cable you need to be using:

Tried it out Friday and it works great. It was not as easy as it should have been though. I hooked it up and started a DVD and nothing. So then I went into Toshiba's HD-DVD player setting and had to tell it to use SPDIF out (which you have to do every time). After that, still nothing. So I went to the sound option under the control panel and everthing was set up correctly but I was getting no sound. Finally under the sound options there were 3 options Dolby Digital, DTS & another windows media out or something. All were checked but it was not passing any sound. So I selected the DD and hit test and wala I had sound and it asked me if I heard anything and I clicked on yes. I did this also for DTS. You would think that as long as these options were checked that it would actually pass these signals but you actually have to select and test each one before it will send the signal. So much for Plug & Play. Why cant they just make things simple? Thanks for everyones help.
