When I am watching tv and I switch to pure direct mode I get sound but no video. I don't know what I am doing wrong... any pointers.

I am using a Yamaha RX-V863 with a panasonic 50" plasma. I have a scientific atlanta cable box with a panasonic blue ray player as well. Cable to the set top box and HDMI from there to the reciever, tv and blu-ray.

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't pure direct shut off anything but the audio?

j_garcia is correct. Pure Direct mode shuts off all non-audio circuits in the unit among other things.

LOL... well thanks for helping me figure out where I went wrong...

I should definitely stop thinking that I know anything about audio/video!!! Cause... I do not!

So is pure direct only for music/audio playback... and if so is there any benefit?

The idea is that the Audio signal would be it purest without interference from video processing and the eq engadged. Wether it is , is whole other story. Id rather have the bass mangement running.

Speaking of base management...

I have an EMP sub with its own crossover and volume settings. I have my yamaha 863 set to LFE bass "out" I believe. Does that mean I am letting my sub do the work or is the reciever still doing the work. In either setting which is the better way to go??? I am still trying to learn about all this stuff and not quite sure that I am at optimum settings yet...:(

Pure Direct mode means the signal is not routed through the DSP processor, thus avoiding signal alteration, but is routed directly through the amps. In non-pure-direct modes, the receiver crossover should be set in the receiver menus to subwoofer on and the crossover set nominally to 80 Hz. The subwoofer should be set to crossover off or to its highest setting. You may want to increase the receiver subwoofer crossover to a higher setting if your speakers don’t have frequency response down to 80 Hz. All the speakers should be set to small to route the bass through the receiver to the subwoofer. The receiver subwoofer should be set for both (LFE and speaker bass).

In pure direct mode, your main left and right speakers play full range with no audio processing at all, and all other processing, video and otherwise is turned off. The new RX-V1900, and I'm sure higher models as well, gives you the option to have video on your pure direct mode, which I think is a nice feature, and I wish it was available on my RX-V1800, and RX-V663.
