No HMDI input on receiver

I'm getting an HDTV with HDMI inputs, but my receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs. Will I be ok running an HDMI cable from my cable box to the HDTV, running an toslink optical cable from the cable box to the receiver and turning the TV's speakers off? Just wondering if there are going to be problems such as 1) video not being in synch with audio; 2) using the HDMI out on the cable box disabling the optical out.

Should work as you described, however I can't say for sure if you will have the sync issue. You should check your manual for whether or not the optical will be disabled for sure, but I doubt it.

I agree. You're set up should be fine. I ran a DVI cable to my TV with a TOSLINK to my receiver for a couple of years with no sync problems at all.

Sync problems

The sync problems you describe are related to the video processing of your HDTV. To perform the de-interlacing, scalling, etc. of video, some TVs introduce several frames of delay. This can cause the the audio signal to get there before the video causing a "lip-sync" issue. To compensate for this problem, most new receivers include an audio delay in the range of 0-200 ms. For example, all Yamaha receivers in the last couple years have included this feature.
