I recently just purchased a Panasonic Blu-Ray player (DMP-8D65) and I am trying to connect it to a just set up Onkyo receiver (HT-R370). My problem is I am not getting any video output to my TV through the HDMI port (I have not yet tried component video as I really want the HDMI). I have tested the BR player on both my PC monitor (when I updated the firmware) and also directly connected to the TV. Both appeared fine when connected through the HDMI port (with the TV getting sound also). I know the HT-R370 has pass thru HDMI, so I have the audio from both my BR and DVR connected through optical connections.

When I try and play a BR movie through the receiver, all I get is the audio. When I play with my DVR through the HDMI port, I get video.

Whats going on here? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The TV is quite a few years old, but a Sony LCD projection.

The only updates I got for the BR player where the automatic updates when its plugged into a network.

I did set the assignments, for this receiver, you only need to set them for the audio and component video.

List your TV model #.

Contact Sony (after you peruse their website for support/FW) to see if there is available FW. You never know, and Sony is a bigger company.

Attach the PDF for the manual to your specific Onkyo.

You are not outputting 24p on player if your display can't handle it right? Pana players are defaulted to 60p, so if you haven't touched that, don't worry.

Good luck.

I will have to wait until morning to check the TV model. Its kinda big and I cant get behind it alone.

I can not attach the manual or submit direct links do to low post cound. But here is a link to where you can find it: w w w.retrevo.com/pdf/23411dj088/6/AV+receiver+HT-R370/]Onkyo HT-R370 manual (You can look through it without DLing it too)

The out putting 24p or 60p I dont know what that is. Since I doubt I touched it, I'm not going to worry.

Thanks for the help and inputs so far guys.

I read the manual, but it does not talk about how to select HDMI inputs so I assume you are right about not having to assign them. It may just pass through anything from any of the 3 inputs and assume that you (like most people) would only turn on one source at a time.

Anyway, I suggest you check the following:

1. Correct input on TV - Make sure the TV is selected to the correct input, e.g. it may have more than one HDMI input so you have to select it to the one connected to the HT-R370's output.

2. Inputs on AVR - Try connecting the BD player's output to each of the 3 HDMI inputs of the HT-R370.

3. HDMI output resolution - You have a very nice BD player but your TV is a few years old so it may not take 1080p/60, let along 24p that Josten already covered. If you have not touched the BD player's settings it may default to 1080p, I would think that they typically default to auto but I am not sure. Even if it defaults to 'auto', try setting it to the lowest resolution and go from there. That is, try 480i first, then 480p, 720p, then 1080i, and see if the TV would do anything for you.

4. Cable - If everything checks out, try a different HDMI cable.

5. Equipment Defects or potential HDCP issues - If nothing works, contact Onkyo and/or Sony tech support.

I played around a little bit more with my problems here. When I connect my BR through the receivers component video inputs, and run the component video to my TV from the receiver, everything seems to come out fine. I went into the BR's settings and changed the component default from 480i to 1080i (my TV doesn't do 1080p). I also could get into the HDMI menu, but since it wasnt connect through the HDMI I could not change anything (?). I did see that it was set at 480p and that 24p was turned off.

Im going to try again and connect the BR directly to the TV to see if I can change any of the HDMI settings to something that might work with my receiver.

Hmm, I never though to check with another cable. I hope its not that simple :(

Did you read page 27 of the manual for the DMP BD65?

https://panasonic.ca/PDP/OperatingInstructions/dmpbd65 e.pdf

If it currently works with component video, then I suggest you use component video for now to get the BD player's menu displayed on the TV screen so you can select the HDMI output resolution to auto or 1080i. After that you should then select HDMI "on" as described on P27 under the heading "HDMI Video Mode".

Try connecting the BD player directly to the TV is an excellent idea though so you should try that first. It allows you to quickly find out if the AVR is the culprit.
