I HATE being a FNG, but all these settings are driving me crazy. i can only imagine what it will be like 10+ years from now
anyway. i am going to go mess with it now. i will come back when my eyes get crossed = won't take long, to see what you guys tell me to try.

TIA

Guys, please help here. I tried to figure it out myself, but to no avail. Perhaps, Jost, or Seth can help here. There are also others that seem to know a lot about issues such as this. Nomo, Adam, and Glock come to mind. Please help as it will be most appreciated.

Cheers,

Phil

Hey, Jesse. Did you assign the HDMI input that you used for the blu-ray player to the source you select to watch/listen to it?

If not, I'll help you through that. I'll download the manual now.

Jesse, I was talking about assigning the HDMI input on the receiver. It is covered on pages 64 and 65 of the owner's manual. The default assignments for the HDMI inputs on the Pioneer are:

HDMI-1 = DVD
HDMI-2 = TV

So, you could try the following - play a blu-ray and select "DVD" on the receiver. No picture? Select "TV". Still no picture? Let me know.

And you're sure that you used the HDMI-1 input on the back?

According to the owner's manual, the Pioneer VSX-818 can't process audio over HDMI. So, while I'm confident that we can get the video working, you won't get any audio with a direct HDMI connection to the receiver. You need to use a different digital or analog audio connection.

You might want to just connect the blu-ray HDMI straight to the TV to avoid the hassle for now, and connect the audio from the blu-ray to the receiver.

i don't care if the video goes throught the reciever. but i need a way to get audio from the player to the reciever. i was using coax on the magnavox bd, worked fine. this bd35 doesn't have a coax. and i don't have a optical cable. guess i'l have to get one.

yeah, i'm sure i have hdmi 1 on the tv. its working now, straight from the player.

how good is optical audio ?
Just as good as digital coax.

Neither optical or coax connections will carry the new lossless codecs (e.g. Dolby TrueHD), but they carry the other formats just great (like Dolby Digital and DTS).

There are a number of posts/threads on that topic here. I haven't read them all, but here's a summary of my impressions from reading them:
  • You may or may not be able to tell a difference between a compressed and a lossless codec.
  • The audio on at least some blu-rays is different between the compressed and the lossless tracks - sometimes the audio seems better mixed on one or the other. Maybe that was just between the lossless track on the blu-ray versus the compressed track on the DVD...I can't remember.
I might have totally hosed up that summary, but that's what I got out of those threads.

Just remember that you might need to assign the digital input on the receiver. That's on pages 64 and 65 of the manual, like I mentioned.

I'd sure appreciate it if you'd let us know once you get it all set up and how you like it. Thanks!

Thanks Adam for your help. I was hoping Jesse could get this worked out, but it sounds like hid receiver is the problem. So, I take it that the 1018 would be needed for him to get to do what he wanted-am I correct here? I am still confused a bit here myself. Appreciate all the help folks.

Cheers,

Phil

Phil, I'm pretty sure that the 918 can process audio from HDMI. The 818 can't.

guys, thanx for your concern. Phil, no hard feelings AT ALL. i love the machine, and i am glad i bought it from you, THANX AGAIN :)

i stopped at wally world on the way home from work, and picked up an optical cable. got home, plugged it in, set the input, and it is working fine. kinda,i somehow lost the onscreen menu for the reciever. but was able to use the receiver display to set it.

wth would pioneer put an hdmi that only does video, on AUDIO gear. sheeeeesh.

i would have bought a better reciever. but when i bought this one a few months ago, but, 5.1 was the only thing i wanted. i had NO plans to get blu-ray or an HDTV....
IT ALL YOUR GUYS FAULTS !!!
and i want to say THANX. while this gear can be a steep learning curve (for the humble brian that i have). the result is just plain FANTASTIC !

I'm very glad that you've got it set up, now! If you are running HDMI from the receiver to the TV, that would explain why you no longer have the on screen display - the OSD doesn't work over HDMI. If you aren't using HDMI between the receiver and the TV, then we can get that working for you if you want.

Money. An HDMI switcher is a lot cheaper than putting in the electronics to extract the audio from that HDMI input. Give it a couple of years, and audio processing over HDMI will be in the low-end receivers because it won't cost nearly as much to implement. At this point, though, it does. I would not be suprised to see HDMI audio processing in Onkyo 500-series receiver in May (that costs about $200 a couple of months after release).
