Hello all...this is my first post after reading and learning from all of you. I have recently purchased both a Samsung 56" DLP and the Panasonic DVD S97. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get audio using the hdmi connection. At this time, I simply have the hdmi connected directly to the TV. I have been in touch with both Samsung and Panasonic and they both tried to trouble shoot it with me and we still could not get sound. Panasonic told me that the dvd is compatible with my TV and it should work. I bought a new HDMI cable to see if it was the cable and still, no luck :( . Samsung told me that I need to set audio to PCM, I have set it at every possible setting and still nothing. Perhaps some of you may have this TV or DVD or may have some other ideas as to how I can get this to work. My next step is to take the dvd to my local panasonic servicer to see if there is a defect. Before I do so, I would like to exhaust all possibilities. Thanks for listening.

Audio Settings

I haven't got to play with the DVD you have yet, but from previous experience hooking up the TV will probably require you to change audio settings on the TV or DVD player or both. I tried once hooking up the Toshiba HDMI player to a 34" Panasonic and it didn't work right away. I didn't know exactly why, but I went through the TV's menu to the audio settings and played with the settings a bit (especially the ones related to input). I don't know the Samsung menu system all that well, so I'm sorry I can't be more specific. Usually when you change the DVD output to PCM is for allowing both Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks to come over the digital cable to a receiver properly. I would first try to find some setting in the TV relating to audio for the HDMI input - because if the TV is expecting a stereo signal from the L/R RCA's then it is ignoring the audio coming through the HDMI cable. I'm checking the TV's manual right now to see if there's anything...

No option for RCA with HDMI

Because there are no RCA's for the HDMI input and because there is no setting for the HDMI input, the TV should be working if you get video - unless the audio signal is bad, the HDMI cable is messed up, or the DVD player is not set up right. Have you tried playing CD's with the DVD player a gotten anything?

If not audio at all

So if there is no sound at all, then the DVD player is not set up properly. If the DVD player is set to HDMI Video Mode and HDMI Audio Output are set to "On", then you should get sound. If it's still not working, then you might just might have a defective cable or more likely defective player. Unfortunately this is becoming more and more common these days with consumer level DVD players, even the more expensive "HD" upscaling units such as the DVD-S97. I hope its just a matter of changing the settings though.

Thanks Mark for the help. I am able to get audio using the optical cable to my receiver. I have also gotten audio using regular AV cables to the TV. I can hear cds through my receiver, but not the TV. Unfortunately, this TV does not allow you to set the audio settings with regard any of the intputs. The only options I have with the audio settings are Mode (which allows you to choose between standard, music, movie, speech, and custom), you can set the equaizer, SRS TSXT, MTS, Auto Volume, and Internal Mute(which is set to off). I will try playing with the stereo settings like you recommend to see if that works.
