I'm considering purchasing the Yamaha RX-V665 Reciever and my current selector switch is the Niles HDS-6. Is this a Passive or Non passive switch box?

On the level of this reciever is there a better model? I know this is all based on user preferences, but being a novice any advice is appreciated. Thank you. RickN

It would have passive electronics. Make sure the speakers you select are easy to drive as the loads will vary to 4ohms.

If there's no power cord or source of voltage used for its operation, it's passive.

Do you recommend a brand for an amplifier or a powered switch box? I need to have the reciever drive speakers in multi rooms (outside, bedroom, etc.)

Just to understand better are you using the 665 to drive your theater and using the zone 2 to drive these other speakers?

You could use any 2 channel amp rated for 4 ohm loads. I use an Onkyo M-282 but you could use a Behringer, emotiva, rotel, etc. I would look for a good used amp that you may find here or craig's list, ebay or audiogon.

Yes, the 665 to drive the theater and the zone 2 to drive other speakers.

It will be driving 4 sets/pairs (outside, 3 bedrooms) of speakers.
