I purchased an Optoma HD72 about a month ago and after finding a permanent location I decided to ceiling mount it. I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas or possible solutions other than buying the $300 mount from optoma. If it turns out that the optoma mount is the only solution then I don't have a problem buying it, I was just wondering if there are other ways to get this thing ceiling mounted.

thanks in advance for your input and I apologize if this has been covered before.

There must be another way:D

Since you have it in hand, you know where the mounting holes are on it. You also know how far down from the ceiling it needs to be. You also know its weight. If you are handy at making things, you could fabricate a mounting plate to mount to the projector, the ceiling and depending on visual looks, in-between the two plates, perhaps a 1/1/2" pipe?

If you are not a DIY person, better buy the factory item, or search the web for a universal that would support your projector.

thank you for the suggestion, I think I will try to look up a friend of mine who could probably fabricate something like this. I would try it myself but I just don't have enough confidence in my abilities to put the projector on the line.

thanks again for your reply.

The Chief RPA-U universal mount is about $150 online and is commonly used by many high-end installers. Mid-level price, first class quality.

As BMX suggested, that universal mount may be the trick for you. Your friend could help mounting on the ceiling, securely. Make sure he uses two ceiling joists somehow. It is essential that you properly line it up, square to the screen, on screen center line, etc. And, check the manual for location distance limits.
