(Newbie) What is the difference between...

the two subwoofers pictured below, apart from the fact that one of them has the speaker behind a metal grille and the other has the speaker hidden somewhere (maybe under the enclosure???). Is there a difference in the way they sound, or is each of them suitable for a certain enviroment like a club, stage, etc. ?

They are both active subwoofers...

SUB WITH THE HIDDEN SPEAKER
• 15" Active-subwoofer
• MT-Amp 800 W/RMS
• 40 – 120 Hz (±3 dB)
• Max. SPL 133dB
• 2 x Neutrik Combo Input
• 2 x XLR Parallel-Out
• 2 x XLR X-Over-Out
• Phase reverse switch
• Dynamic softclip limiter
• Weight: only 32 kg

SUB WITH VISIBLE SPEAKER
15" dBTechnologies Woofer
RMS Leistung: 400 Watt
Musikleistung: 800 Watt
Schalldruck: 127 dB SPL max.
Frequenzgang: 30-150 Hz
Abstrahlwinkel: rundabstrahlend
Maße: 450x500x500 mm
Gewicht: 24 kg

Any help at all is greatly appreciated,
Thank you

One is probably horn loaded while the other is a vented-box design. The horn loaded designs are usually more sensitive (read: louder with the same amount of power).

I know what the vented box is, but.....What is a horn-load? (sorry, new to this scene).

Thing is, the one with the vented box is 150$ more expensive, even if it has lower db and same power and because of this i suppose that it should sound better?
I want to use it in a small club, so no need for stage technology.

A bandpass box places the woofer on a baffle internal to the box.

Each side is a seperate chamber, the front is always ported (this is where your output comes from) the rear can be, depends on the design.

These boxes will have two tuning frequencies and play within that band (hence the name-bandpass).

They are relatively loud and perform very well.

The downfall is that you cannot hear distortion from these boxes until way over woofer killing limits. People tend to keep turning them up until they kill the speaker because it still sounds good.

One method that helps is sticking an ear to a port (short time only please) and you can hear if the speaker is getting over worked (if you know what youre listening for)

To answer your question, they definitely both look like club type applications.

DJ Sub?

Is this for a DJ or pro-audio application?
Otherwise, for HT, you will want a sub that plays down to the 20Hz range.

It is for a small club, nothing too fancy about it and no demanding audience...i just need to make customers feel the beat and dance, that's all.

I don't know what "HT" is.
