I am just new into the home cinema world and I bought an Onkyo TXSR506 Silver (AV Receiver - With HDMI interface) and I am wondering if I made a good purchase for a novice? I think it sounds great, but friends have been critical on my choice, stating that it is dated, blah blah blah. I would be grateful if the people in the know could confirm if I wasted my cash.

Does it do everything you need it to do?

If so, you're fine.

You could buy new stuff twice a year if you worry about what everyone else says, and still be behind what's being promised for the next release.

Virtually everything being forced upon us nowadays are "features" oriented, not "performance" oriented. I'm enjoying a Denon 2803 from 2003 or so and still don't feel a nagging urge to upgrade. I have nothing to gain, sound-wise.

HT receiver

Sclops,
That receiver will work great for nearly any 8 ohm speakers in a reasonable size room. The only technology limitation is that is doesn't include HDMI audio processing. You would need BluRay AND some really nice speakers to take advantage of this technology.

When you are ready to hook everything up, check out monoprice.com for good deals on cables. Check the other forums for advice on speakers and other gear.

Enjoy the new gear and don't look back.
FYI, I am also using a 2 year old receiver without any HDMI in my system.

There will always be people criticizing, what,s important is how it sounds to you, and since you are new, stick to this forum and learn as much possible and on day you will impress you friend.

From the sounds of it that won't be too long and he'll be tossing pearls before swine.

In the last few months, I also thought about upgrading my receiver. But after visiting with a sales rep that I've known for years, I opted not to. He did not try to talk me into buying anything, more to the point, he saw no real need for it in my case. And by then, neither did I. This wasn't the first time I was talked out of buying something new by a sales rep. It's not that they wouldn't have liked to sell something, they just did not see the sensibility of it. So up to this point, I kept things as is, and for now, that is fine too. Everybody has an opinion, but yours is the one that matters most. As long as your happy with your purchase, that is what matters most. Enjoy it, and don't let your friends talk you into believing you made a wrong decision. They might not have the expertise they want you to think they do. They could also be jealous of what you have and they don't.
