What is the deal with pre-out speaker connections? is it a connection that provides no power to the speakers? I have a pre-out connection for my sub. The sub i have is passive, can i use a passive sub with a pre-out connection? or do i need a active sub? I have a pioneer VSX-815. Also, do active subs have there own power plug?

thanks

A pre-out connection needs to go to an amplified source. You cannot use your passive sub with a pre-out connection.

If you have a passive sub, it should have speaker terminals. Run your main speaker wires from your receiver to your sub, then from your sub, another pair of speaker wires to your main speakers. Your passive sub has a built in crossover. You will not be able to utilize the receivers bass management system with a passive sub. Set all your speakers to large, and subwoofer setting at the receiver to "none."
