Newbie question - lip sync solution?

The old tube TV finally died so we decided to upgrade to HDTV. Laughably, I thought it would be a simple process.

Not having any prior sound system, an improvement is easy to find. We bought an Onkyo SR600 ($269) , an LG upconverting DVD player ($79), a Vizio 37" LCD TV ($799), and a new Hughes HD DVR satellite receiver from DirecTv ($99). Plug it all in and several hours later I feel as though things are going great. When we only listened to the TV speakers before, this was a great improvement!

And then the lip sync or audio delay or whatever it's called got noticeable...then worse..but I couldn't figure out what the cause is. Seemed worse on TNTHD than other stations. I also noticed it when watching an old DVD on the new player as well. It's not every station or all of the time.

I think I get why it's happening now (from reading about the issue online)...but I don't know what my best solution is.

I'm running HDMI from the DVD and Directv to the TV. Optical audio cable from DTV to the Onkyo receiver and coax digital audio from the DVD to the receiver. I've looked all over the Onkyo website and my manual for an audio adjustment but I dont believe it has that feature.

I know for some people it's not a big deal, but this is really distracting for me.

So do I buy one of those Felston units ($200) or do I return the Onkyo for a new receiver or HTIB? I want a separate DVD player because of my 3 year old. I originally bought the Onkyo SR800 but those speakers were way too big in my living room so I opted for the SR600.

Any advice is appreciated. I'm willing to spend **a little** more but I need something easy to set up that sounds good at low and mid levels. We mostly watch satellite TV and movies.

The lip sync through the receiver may be solved with either its internal menu or the DVD player's menu should have an adjustment for lip sync.

Not sure about the direct to TV setup, if that bypasses your receiver, what you can adjust.

This happens when there is sufficiently more calculating going on in the video than audio chain.

My Onkyo TX-SR805 receiver had a lipsync adjustment. I don't now about the SR600. Also, why don't you go HDMI from your DTV and DVD to your receiver and HDMI from the receiver to the TV?

Also, what has the receiver got to do with the size of your speakers?

Your problem is opposite the "norm".

Most folks need to delay the audio to match up with the extra time it takes to process digital video. That's why most receivers now include lip-sync adjustments so you can delay the audio to match up with the "already delayed" video.

It sounds like you have the opposite problem where the video goes first, then the audio. Is that the case? Lips move when a word is spoken, then the sound arrives?

I'm not sure how to fix that one. I know you need to keep your lip-sync delay set to minimum (0) to be the best it can possibly be (you don't want to delay audio any more than it already is).

You need a way to delay the video.

What about the display? Does the Samsung have any noise reduction options that you may have turned off? (that would potentially delay the video by a frame or two).

yes...the problem is that lips start to move and then audio follows..lips stop moving and audio keeps going....it is very frustrating...the rx v2065 allows a "pass through" via HDMI...meaning that i can watch a bluray or cable while the receiver and amp are in stand-by mode and the audio and video is played through the TV. when i run this set up...lips are in sysnc...no problems...i even took my bluray player down to BB and had them test it both hooked direct to a tv and routed though an AV processor. it worked fine for them which makes me think it is my receiver or my amp that is slowing down the audio.....what is strange is that the longer you watch something the worse it gets.......i couldnt imagine watching an entire movie....by the time the video was over...i would end up with like 15 seconds of audio still coming through........and for the record....talking to yamaha tech is a pain in the butt.
