I agree with what Mazer said about the AV123 x-series speakers. If you go with the x-mtm towers at $339/pr, the x-cs center at $129, and x-ls bookshelves at $165/pr, it leaves you $367 for shipping and a sub. I would recommend you save up a little more for a decent subwoofer by SVS or HSU.

If you don't like the x-mtm towers, then get another pair of the x-ls bookshelves for $165. This setup with 4 bookshelves and the center channel comes to $459. You could get a HSU VTF-2 MK3 sub for $499. Or, once again for a little more, get a better sub by HSU the VTF-3 MK3 for $629.
Don't know if he knows these have a Risk Free Trial program on the x-ls bookshelves. He will be able to get a idea of the X-series sound.

RISK FREE TRIAL!
Worried you won’t love the speakers unless you have the chance to hear them first? No problem! Order a pair of x-ls speakers and spend a month with them in your own home. If after 30 days you don’t love them, we will pay the shipping charges back to us, credit your original form of payment for the speakers AND the outbound shipping! (UPS GROUND only) This means the demo is no risk to you!

For $1000, everything I have READ says either AV123 or SVS, possibly Axiom. One thing I can talk first hand about is the AV123 X-sub. My G/f bought one for my HT system, and let me tell you, it ROCKS. 2 of them would be REALLY serious, but 1 would start you off right.

If it were me, I would get the AV123

-cs Center/Main/Surround Loudspeaker $139 on sale now with metal grill!

-x-sls Tower Loudspeaker $259 pair, black on sale with metal grills

-x-ls Bookshelf Loudspeaker $185 Black with metal grill on sale now!

-X-sub $199

Total: $782

You could even get the nicer fronts and/or CS's for the rear
