I am trying to put together a home theater. I have between 500-750 available for speakers. These will be run through either a yamaha RX V663 or 863. I have no Idea what to look for in a decent mid-level speaker...
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
You best bet is to go audition as many speakers as you can stand to do. At your price point, you are spending way too much on the receiver and not enough on the speakers, if optimal sound quality is the goal. Even a very low end receiver will be capable of good sound (provided one is using it with tolerably efficient, non-low impedance speakers), but low end speakers typically are not.
If you will have more money for speakers in the future, you could just buy the front three speakers with your current amount, and save up for the surrounds and subwoofer. Really, it depends upon how much you are willing to spend, and how important sound quality is to you (as opposed to features and other considerations), what you should do. But spending as much on a receiver as on speakers is not going to get you the best sound for your money. If you bought the bottom end Yamaha, it would give you more money for better speakers. True, you would not have the new BD sound formats, but DD or DTS through better speakers will sound better than new sound formats through lessor speakers.
