is DVD-A decoded by the DVD player or the reciever?

I know DVD-A is supposed to be higher res that a DTS audio DVD but DVD-A sounds like pure crap on my setup, hardly any surround effects are played with my oppo. Stereo sounds better.

I have the 5.1 analog cables hooked up and made sure my reciver was using them and not the optical out i use for movies.

my reciever is an older model so i wondered if it was the recievers fault.

DVD-A is decoded by the DVD player, so most likely it is the culpret.
What is your equipment? Are you using decent cables?

When you use multichannel analog, the player is doing the decoding. There are a few things that may be at fault here - when using the m/c analog connection, you also have to set the distances and levels in the player because the receiver generally does no processing for that input (with a digital connection the receiver's settings are used). That leaves you at the mercy of the capabilities of the player and I believe in the AH review of the 971 it said bass management was a weakness of this player.

Next, some universal players need to be configured to select the DVD-A portion of the disc rather than the DVD-V (standard DVD) portion and many are set to DVD-V by default, so you'll have to check your manual or setup menus to see if this is an option (it should be).

i have an REM, 2 Porcupine tree albums and NIN DVD-A

I have the oppo set to play DVD-A tracks over DVD-V when avaiable.

im using belden cables for the 5.1 analog outs, However I did not use my SPL to configure the oppo's settings, I thought the reciever distance and volume settings would take care of that. im not even sure where i can get tones to set the analog settings from.

there are some surround effects but they are barely audible most of the time.
If i configure the dvd players distance and volume settings it doesnt normally effect the optical out right?

thanks for the responces

The receiver level matching is for its own processing of DD/DTS, etc.
When you send the 5.1 analog, no processing in the receiver so all bets are off and must set up the player.

Yes, the settings in the player apply only to the analog outs, not the digital. The Porcupine Tree DVD-As have a lot of surround activity.

If you play a DVD-A with DVD-V priority on the player, you are NOT hearing the hires tracks, you are hearing a DD or DTS version. Both of the Porcupine Tree DVD-As have DTS tracks on them that are very good too, that you can listen to via digital just like any other DVD, though the DVD-A tracks are just a bit better IMO.
