Hi Im new to home theater world looking for some help. Looking to install home theater in new house, room is large 24' x 22' two story so I figure 7.1 is the way to go. I was originally going to purchase Bose v20, I know its a 5.1, but through some research I come to find this might not be the best way to go. Ive been looking at the Onkyo HT-S6200 but the speakers are to large, looking for built in? What do you think Onkyo HT-S6200 with say some Polk built in speakers. Budget isnt to high say around $2,000 for complete system. Any help would be appreciated

Unfortunately, in a room that size, you really need larger speakers that can fill the room with sound. Of course all this depends on your expectaions. How high is the ceiling? By built in, do you mean in-wall?

The Onkyo HT-S6200 may be a decent purchase just to obtain the receiver. It seems to be a watered down version of the 806 which offers good power output.

Might have to stick with large speakers

Ceiling is 20' high. Yes built in speakers in wall. Never thought I might need larger speakers due to size of room. Model home in my development has Bose system with invisible built in speakers although its a slightly smaller room.

I need to retract that statement as I misread the specs. The receiver is actually more akin to the 607 which can be purchased for less than $500.

Trying to squeeze the best bang out of the $2K for the sub, the SVS PB12-NSD http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-pb12nsd.cfm should work well and still leave some cash for the speakers. For a bit more the Epik Sentinel. http://www.epiksubwoofers.com/portedsentinel.html

I have a house with a room of similar size. As AVRat pointed out' larger speakers are generally recommended for larger spaces to the get the most out of such a great space.

Although in wall speakers may provide a clean look, it compromises the quality of sound that one can get with cabinet speakers.

I suggest taking some time to do a little research. It will pay out great dividends in the end.

I wish I had the opportunity to install all my equipment into my house while it was being built. Things would have been very different and would have been far less work.

Funny, yeah, Bose is probably not the way to go! Other than great commercials, they are not teribbly respected in the AV world. Finding the perfect set of speakers was, for me, the most fun thing about the home theatre experience.

For a receiver, I would strongly recommend going used or a year old model. They are always putting out new models, without necessarily any improvements. Just make sure it has the connections you'll need (DVI, HDMI, etc).

I have come to realize big room = Big speakers

I'm looking at the 7.1 compact surround system with SBS-01 mains and PB10-NSD fsub rom SVS for speakers

Still trying to narrow down a receiver

What brand reciever would you recomend for a newbie

He doesn't necessarily NEED to fill the whole room with sound...he just needs the sound stage to be spot on, which could account for 60% of the total room footprint. That is of course, he's trying to fill the entire room with sound, in which case ignore the aforementioned.

On a side note, I think Polks are a good choice: great Bang for the buck! Check out Newegg's price for Monitor 50's, 60's, & 70's.

True Family room not Media room

Yes this is true I don't need to fill the whole room with sound. The room is a living room not a home theater room, I will be adding one of those when I finish my basement. I opted for a Onkyo NR 807 and a medium sized set of Klipsch speakers and Subwoofer.

I appreciate everyones suggestions between this web site/forum and my own research I am quickly starting to get a handle on things
