Hello All,

I have been lurking on these pages last couple of weeks, I was all set to buy a used Bose system until I came here and a few other places and now I have changed my mind and have FINALLY settled on a Onkyo NR709 with the Infinity P363. I hope I enjoy, but my question is what would be a good center channel speaker and surround speakers to hang in back corners of room on a $500 - $600 budget. I will have to get a sub later. The wife says I am already over budget with what I have spent so I guess its mad money time. :) The room size is 15x24. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum! From what I've read on here, I think that you'll be real happy with those 363s.

Preferably, you'll get speakers from the same line as those 363s to fill in the rest of your system. In particular, you want the center channel and front speakers to be tonally matched. In short, stick with the Infinity Primus line.

Infinity has two center channels in that line to choose from:
- PC251 (around $150)
- PC351 (around $200)

For surrounds, I'd go with bookshelf speakers. My preference would be the P163 only because that would seem to be the matching number to your speakers (others here might know better). The 153 is close in frequency response to the 163, but I'd tend to shy away from the 143 because it's only rated down to 100 Hz. Even when you get a sub, the 153 and 163 are going to be a better (they are rated to go below 60 Hz).

Get the Primus c350 or c351. I wouldn't get the c250 or c251. Get the best center you possibly can.

I'm in nearly same boat as heit911man (Onkyo NR809 with two P362s). Receiver and speakers should be arriving tomorrow afternoon - so pumped.

I've also started to research center channel and sub options. My space is small - 12x12x10, and I will be using the system for about 60% music 40% movies/tv. How much will I be missing out on from an audio quality standpoint without the center channel?

From reading the forums on this website, I realize that I will be missing quite a bit without a quality sub, especially on the movie side. Considering the size of my room, will the woofers in the 362s be sufficient?

Any help would be appreciated!

Some people are more sensitive to not having a center channel than others. Music wise you won't miss it if you're listening in direct or stereo mode obviously, but if you listen in 5-channel stereo or any surround/multi-channel mode, well, that might be a bit of a problem. Personally, I like having a center channel - it keeps the dialogue locked on the screen.

For the sub, it depends slightly on what type of movie - if you watch a lot of movies with no content below ~100 Hz i.e. no action movies (though, I'm sure there's other with low frequency content), then you can probably get by w/o a subwoofer, at least for a while. If you look at the frequency response on the P360's, you can see they start tailing off at 100 Hz. As a very general rule, most competently designed subwoofers should do frequencies below 80-100 Hz better than most speakers, since that's what they were designed to do.

For you, there's good news and bad news. The good news is, since your room is so small, you should have pretty good room gain and shouldn't need a monster sub to get worthwhile results. The bad news is, your room is square, and almost a cube in dimensions, which is not good for acoustics.

If I were you, I would look into getting subs - more than one. You could get by with one, but multiples are almost always preferred to smooth frequency response, which will be extra important for your particular room.

HDMI cables

Next newbie question, which HDMI cables do I need? I see all different dollar amounts. $1.97 to $????. Monoprice has them from $1.97 for 1.5ft 28AWG High Speed HDMI® Cable w/Ferrite Cores and other places are $15 and higher. Will these HDMI cables from monoprice be fine if I get the correct length? Thanks in advance!

I use HDMI cables from Monoprice and they all work just fine. Mine are up to six feet long.
