I am wanting to take advantage of the XM audio from Directv. What is the least amount of equipment needed to push a couple 6-8" ceiling mount speakers on the porch?
I don't need alot of volume just background music.
Thanks

Welcome, HR!

All you need is something that will accept the audio signal from the Directv receiver (either a digital signal or an analog signal), convert a digital signal to analog (if required), amplify that signal, allow you to vary the volume, and output the signal to your speakers.

Any inexpensive receiver can do that with an analog (and maybe even digital) signal, and an integrated amplifier could do it with an analog signal. Do you have a receiver around that you could use?

Thanks for the welcome and reply,,,,,, exactly the info. I needed.
Yes, I have a receiver in storage (5 yrs.) I'm not digging it out or telling the bride.......looks to be time to shop for a 5.1 system.

Thanks again

If you're going to be looking for a new receiver, you may just want to get one that has solid secondary zone capability. That will solve the both "problems" ... until you realize you want/need a new tv, new speakers, new blu-ray, etc. :)

I second Itschris idea of going with a reciever with multiple zone functionality.
You can find them under 400usd so it's not like you'd have to break the bank.
If you want to be able to listen to music on the porch while your bride watches a dvd you'll need to spend a little more.
