new year, time for a new car?

I really like the CX-5 but it's slower to 60 than my old car >_>

Warrior, I don't even know how to ride a bicycle, much less a motorcycle. I'd probably die in DFW traffic on a bike though.

BSA, that subaru legacy looks pretty nice :)

Pfft, Dallas has EXCELLENT highways! I rode through there during rush hour on my move east. It was effortless. But of course now that I'm used to Los(t) Angeles anything is easy!

Try and find ya a used VW TDI. Supreme fuel economy, which will get even better once the motor is actually broken in @ 150k miles!

Now if only you had just been to the grocery store and had hotdogs in the trunk...

Glad you made it out safe. Definitely not fun!

I won't offer up any suggestions for vehicles. We do have a 2009 Subaru Forrester that has done well for us... oh wait, they have just been recalled because the ground light in the mirrors can cause a fire. Ok, forget that idea...

You've been given some good recommendations for vehicles, I would suggest buying American.

New Fords get good reviews, like the Fusion and the Focus. Other good cars would be newer Chevy Malibu, Pontiac Vibe, I really like Buick and have an '03 LeSabre.

Good luck.

Maybe just maybe purchas your self a lovely Mazda 3 or if you can get ford get the ford focus xr5 turbo little hatch backs that are verey nice to drive :) sporty but yet a grate car to drive
Only get a ford if you like loose steering. I see no reason to buy a brand new Mazda 3 unless you get a real deal on it. I mean a used Mazda 3 drives the same as a new one.(I have over 100k on my 08 and it drives the same) If you do get one I recommend you put Kuhmo summer tires on it. That's what's on mine and it really took the car to a new level.

If you do plan to buy I got mine at Bankston Mazda on Bryant Irvin in 08 and they have a very good service center and you can get a deal if you ask. You really don't need the warranty for a Mazda IMO. I do suggest you head over to Carmaxx for test drives because you can try a variety of cars.

Motorcycles are nice, but I wouldn't drive one around Fort Worth.

Wow. Glad you are ok. I've never seen a car do that before and I worked in a garage for nearly 10 years while in college.

I've got two friends that picked this car up in the last couple of years, but as new. One is a wagon, the other sedan. They are both goo goo ga ga over their respective rides, one of whom (sedan) is coming from a whole string of nice cars (Benz, Audi, BMW, etc). This sedan guy wanted a Passat I believe, and a stick shift, but I think very limited supply to demand had him settle, but he's still very happy. I haven't asked them in a while about their rides. I did ask the sedan guy about a month after he picked up his ride about his fuel costs.

Me: How much to fill up your tank, and how often?
Him: I don't know.
Me: What do you mean, you don't know?! How can you not know?
Him: I still haven't had to fill up yet!

I think he was in the ballpark of ~600 miles on his first tank(!), +/- 100, because I can't quite remember. However, what I have noticed with people who pick up their first super efficient car is that they go super-grandma on them just to see what they can eek out. I noticed that with early Prius owners too. Anyway, if you check out TDIs, you won't have much in the way of choice these days, and if you're expecting a great deal, you need to have superlative negotiating skills. That, or a nice bottle of tequila to get P Dawg to come along with you.

Re the Mazda 3, they're actually more spacious than you might think. My friend is 6'5" and is quite comfy driving his Mspeed 3. A word of warning with Mazda is that the paint is as thin as it comes in the industry, so always keep protective coats on it if you care about looks/longevity/rust/resale/etc.

Sorry to hear about your car problems and happy to hear you are unharmed.

I second the VW TDI. That will be my next car after my Toyota leases expire. They aren't slouches of the 0 - 60 but not the fastest car either. Lots of torque makes highway passing a breeze and they are SOOOOO fuel effcient.

TDI is a good choice, but diesel costs more than regular gas even though it gets better mileage. My buddy has had a TDI Jetta since 09 and he loves it.

If I were you, I'd get a Ferrari. They never catch on fire.

Its true diesel costs more than gas but one would spend more money on gas than on diesel based on fuel consumption.

Plus, you can use biodiesel from things like french fry grease. Hmmm, french fries. TDI, you say? :D

make sure you get a deal don't pay full sticker for an accord or any other plain car. You lose a lot of value once you take it off the lot.

Not in every case if you happened to pick up one of the other regular gas cars that also easily get 30-35mpg range, of which there are a larger number these days. The SkyActiv Mazdas would be a good example of that, getting 35mpg. I am not saying Mazda is the way to go though, even though I liked the MS3, I went with the WRX because I felt it was a better car overall after driving both. The TDI still gets better mileage than the typical car though. There was an article in R&T showing the TDI got the same mileage as a Prius on the freeway, just not in town in stop and go traffic.

When I was considering the MS3, I did some checking into Mazda and found that the one knock against Mazda was the quality and number of dealers. The level of satisfaction with the dealerships was very low compared to other brands. A little surprising to be honest, but just like any car, finding a good mechanic, ideally one that specializes in your car, is still a better idea anyway.

Now talking to a VW dealer about the 2013 Jetta TDI and Golf TDI, and a Honda dealer about the 2013 Accord (LX, Sport, or EX). The USAA car buying service is pretty sweet. Seem to get better pricing than the costco service. Seems to be the same as my L-3 communications corporate perks discount.
