New vs old AV Recivers

Hi. I have just purchased and recived a used Yamaha RX-V765 reciver which i read up the specs on and was very impressed with. But anyway i am pairing it up with Dali Zensor 1, and a Zensor vacal with aim of going bigger at a later date and having the Zensor 1’s as surrounds. My question is not realising quite how old the reciver is, is it actually as good as it sounds by the specs and a more solid amp or would i better going for a much newer or even new lower power amp (i paid £65 for it and it immaculate). So how does it compare to a new £200 amp for instance. Thanks

The avr is mostly about the feature set/connectivity it offers, and some amp sections are stronger than others. Can't really do it by price point alone but as long as the V765 has what you need, I doubt a 200 quid avr would be "better" except perhaps for 4k/atmos type features, and probably wouldn't have as strong an amp section.

Thanks for you input this is sort of what i was thinking. I have only ever had in box setups then a massive downgrade to a soundbar so i am starting from the beginning now.

I didn’t go out looking for this amp in particular i came across it on ebay and looked the specs up. It just seemed so powerful and heavy compared to any new one i could afford. It had standby pass through which is important aswell as a few other features but apart from that is seems like its just quite a simple but powerful amp. As of yet i do not have anything that supports 4K and it seemed to me after a-lot of looking that most new amps especially in my price point at the moment as im buying a-lot at ones that they push for more and more features but keeping it cheep, so they must be cheaping out on the power supply or the internal amps.

Calling an avr an "amp" isn't very descriptive. An avr is an audio video receiver, but an amp generally refers to a simple power amp.

That avr has reasonable power, but its amp section isn't really powerful as compared to many (power) amps. Keep in mind that the differences among avr amps at 8ohm loads tend to be fairly minor, the ones capable of high output at lower impedances (4 or less) would be more "powerful". Keep in mind it takes a doubling of amp power to gain a mere 3dB in spl, too, so often they're more similar than different. You might want to check out a few articles along these lines.
