Not directly A/V related but for those of us watching Netflix or listening to Pandora over FiOS it's interesting :D. Verizon is rumored to be bumping up speeds and prices starting June 17th. I'm currently on a 35/35Mb/s plan as part of an internet/TV/premium channel package and there are reports that those speeds might be bumped to 75/35. No confirmation on the latter yet but that's the rumor going around the DSLReports Verizon Internet forum.

Exclusive: new Verizon FiOS plans coming June 17th, 300Mbps service to cost $204.99 per month | The Verge

Updated info below. Don't forget that if you're already under contract that you'll have to ask for what may be a free bump to the new speed. The best part is no caps. :D

300mbit down is actually fast enough to justify replacing the ol' WRT54G with something faster. *drool*

If only I could get FiOS. :(

Called Verizon and upgraded to 75/35. Best speedtest to date is 84/35.

Fios, shmios... I get this on cable and pay much less - currently on one year promo - basic+family pgk tv, hd dvr, Boost internet and phone ( I don't use the later, but it cheaper to have it) = total bill is $136
As soon as promo ends I'd cancel the phone, but probably keep the boost service..

yea, and thank god - no caps

I've got FiOS 15/5 and had been consistently getting 20/5. I was kinda upset that I would be getting no speed upgrade during this process but recently I've actually been consistently getting 25/5. I have never heard of any other ISP giving you speeds 66% faster than the "guaranteed" speed. I would have liked a doubling of upload speed though so that I could stream my DVD collection at friends houses...

My current plan is 50/10 and i'm getting 64 down consistently (not at all times), then I was on 15/5 - I had 24 down, but the rush hours

Uncompressed DVD is about 900KB/sec so yeah, you'd need closer to a 10mbit up pipe, but if you're compressed with anything modern (or hell, even old, just down to typical 1.3GB/movie at largest) you should be able to do that fine over 5mbps...

If you have FiOS TV then Verizon pads your download speeds a bit so that you'll still get the full promised internet speeds while watching their IPTV channels.

I have over 300 DVDs and plenty of HDD space, compressing them just is not worth the processor time. Blurays on the other hand get compressed immediately upon being ripped as those will eat through all my space in no time.

The last thing I want to do is compress a BD further. I did it with DVDs in the early 2000's but I stopped watching DVDs in late 2005 in anticipation of the HD DVD and BD launch.

But I've also got over 100TB of storage available on my home newtork so storage capacity is not an issue.

I'm still flip flopping about upgrading to a new internet speed on FiOS. My current deal I got a few months ago was really good. I signed a new two year contract for Ultimate HD, 35/35 interent and Digital voice for only $110 month. Plus i got a $327 gift card on top of that. This is the lowest price I've paid for FiOS in the five years I've had it. They want $15 extra for the 50/25 tier, $20 extra for the 75/35 service and $40 extra for the 150/65. While those are good deals for the speed I'm not sure i can justify the huge yearly increase in cost since my current bundle is such a low price.

Although I am considering dropping from Ultimate Hd to the Extreme tier. then If i get the 75/35 tier my price would stay at $110 a month. Or if I got the 50/25 tier my price would go down to $105. and with the fluff added it's some nice speed. I'm just having a hard time pulling the trigger on dropping my TV tier. Once I do I can see FiOS adding some national HD channels in mPEG4 I would want and that the extreme package would not get. At least that is how things have happened in the past when I downgraded a service.
