New to the world of audio

Hi guys,

I have just purchased a new system. See: BAUHN - 5.1 Channel Home Theatre System

I got it for only 299 Aussie dollars. Created by a company called Bauhn!

After researching the world of audio! I think I have made a mistake. It doesn't mention anything about DOLBY Digital or DTS. On the front of the system it says things like "DCSC Amplifier", "Digital Cinema" and "DSP, Digital Surround". What do these mean?

Can someone please help me out? How bad is this system? Your thoughts will be much appreciated. Anyway to improve this system? For example, should I save for a better receiver? The speakers look ok to me, but then again I don't really know much about audio. This is my first av receiver and I was on a budget!

That certainly is a strange bird, all right, and that blurb is amazing in how much it doesn't say.

Firs toff, your subwoofer is powered by that receiver. It won't work with another AVR. You'll need to replace the subwoofer.

As for the power specs, normally all AVR channels have equal power. The ways your receiver lists then, it reminds me of DPL receivers from 15 years ago.

And, yes, I don't see DD/DTS listed anywhere, but it DOES have HDMI. But, that'sno guarantee that the sould is what we would expect.

On the plus sice, 5.1 "implies" six descrete channels, which is only available from a digital audio feed. Yes, it does have six amplifier channels, but whether they are fed from a dightal DD/DTS signal, or a two channel DPL signal, is the question which they don't clarift.

Sorry I can't offer more assistance.

It is what it is, how does it sound? Looks like a lot of big stuff for $299, was that shipped? If so WOW...

But anyway as far as upgrading, the first thing would be the Sub, but you are going to spend at least $300 or so to get something decent.. I would hook all that up, and see where you stand.. After you upgrade the sub, then the receiver to something but again you are going to spend $240 or so for a decent unit, then the front 3 speakers, could cost you around $300, then put the best 2 speakers tht come with that set on surround duty and call it a day...

good luck with it, if it makes you happy and sounds good to you, who cares what it costs..

The sound is ok! I mean it works basically...but I cant seem to get the sound to come from watching free to air normal TV! and I have connected it using a HDMI cable. The PC connected to the A/V reciever via HDMI works fine as in the sound works on all the speakers.
