New to the Scene - Need help

Hey Guys,

I'm considering either Axiom or NHT speakers for my surround sound/music system. I'm also going to get a HSU sub and the new Yahama rx-v2600 receiver. I will be placing these speakers on a bookshelf in front and wall mounted in rear.

My Budget is around $3,000.00 What's ya'll opinion on the speaker choice?

Neither one of them are to my tastes but thats my tastes. They are both well engineered solid well built speakers . But before buying any of them, I would try to audition them with music and dvds that you are familar with, take notes on each one you audition. And when you've narrowed it down again, audition some more to make sure its the sound you like.

About putting the speakers on shelves, they would sound way better if you put the speakers on stands, espcially your main left and right speakers. Free standing speakers image better than those cluttered with stuff around them. If you have the option to go bookshelf with stands, choose it over placing them on shelves near walls and cluttered with things.

I wouldn't buy rear ported speakers for the fronts if they are going in a bookshelf.

Other then that, what size is the room? This will help with the subwoofer decision.

Ditto what Sheep said. If you're going to actually put them inside a bookshelf, you'll want sealed or front ported speakers, which would favor the NHTs.

What speakers do ya'll recommend if not these?

I like the Paradigm Studio series. I have had the Studio 20s as my L F C for the past six years and have been very pleased with their performance.

Speaker options

What is the depth of the bookshelf? Is the back open or closed. If you can get a few inches of space behind the speakers and are crossed over at 80 Hz or above, than you can probably get away with rear ported speakers.

If you check on audiogon.com for slightly used speakers, you can probably get the paradigm studios in your budget.

You might also consider some of the on-wall type speakers available from Axiom or Paradigm.

Your high ceiling will be a challange for the sub, so budget for a good 12" model from SVS or HSU.

Acoustic Concepts (ACI) has some wonderfully beautiful and sounding speakers made for accuracy. These come highly recommended and will fit your budget, easily. But as with any speaker purchase, the choice should satisfy your ears, not ours.

I went and heard this system and priced it out:

Paradigm Studio 20 Left and Right Front : $850
Paradigm cc 370 Center: $399
Paradigm Studio adp370 rear : $750
Paradigm PS 1000 Sub: $600

NAD AT753 AMP: $1,000
NAD T514 DVD/CD : $300

What do ya'll think about this setutp?

Nice system. If it were me I would change three things. I would get a Hsu STF-3 sub for the same money, I would get a RVX Yamaha 2600 receiver and whatever Denon, Panasonic or Sony DVD play that sells for $150. I keep reading horror stories about NAD QC.

I agree with Nick, but you should also look at SVS as far as subwoofers are concerned. I think a PB-12 has more output and extension then an STF-3.
