New to me HSU toy

Today I scored an old HSU VTF-3 turbo subwoofer. Got it hooked up already and once I have the place to myself tonight, ill rev it up and see what its got.

It goes well with the little bose cubes. Wasn't sure it would better than the bose sub since the bose sub has 2 woofers and this one only has 1 but so far it seems better. Funny thing is the bose has 2 subs and 1 port and this has 2 ports and only 1 sub?

Watched The Incredibles and listened to a few cd's. Got good and low with Goldfrapp and Perpetual Memery Loss from Realistic.

By far you got ripped off!! That BOSE sub is the best you can get!! I say keep the Bose and sell that crummy HSU sub to me

In all seriousness, when you get tired of the Bose cubes and upgrade to some Mirage OMD-5 satellites, lemme know how amazing it sounds.

I turned a friend from a current Bose Acoustimass setup to an eD A3-300/ Mirage OMD-5 setup and it was night-and-day between the two. Same price...HUGE difference in performance. The A3-300 is roughly in the same league as the HSU you have. The OMD-5's have better 'open-ness' and ambience than the BOSE cubes, with a seriously upgraded amount of 'air' around the high frequencies (prolly due to the fact that they reach up to around 22kHz, as opposed to the BOSE cubes' 13-14kHz hi end extension). The midrange was also richer and fuller. All this with a minimal size increase.

If you run a frequency sweep, you'll find that the cubes do not go low enough to actually 'mate' with the HSU (or any other quality sub). They'll only reach down to about 150Hz with some audible distortion...and MAYBE 130Hz with a LOT of distortion...depending on which version of the cubes you have. Just for your mental digestion, not trying to rip on you. Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing your upgrade.

Great choice on sub, btw. I'm sure you'll be blown away by both music and movies.

Thanks, it is always nice to share in the experience of going from mediocre to quality.

Unfortunately, Bose has done an amazing job of marketing (including strict control of in-store displays) such that the typical consumer will look to their products for an upgrade from a WalMart HTiB; however, they really don't offer very good bang for the buck compared to other options.

Orb Audio and Mirage Nanosats leave Bose cubes in the dust and are no bigger and no more expensive. Enjoy the HSU as it's a great sub.
