I am new to all this Bookshelf speaker mumbo jumbo. Well I am starting to get into audio. I have an Auzentech Prelude as a source and need some book shelf speakers.......Looking to get a decent pair that won't kill the bank

Also i have a few questions

1 - Do i need a receiver or something else to run these babies off?
2 - They are going to be better than say a set of Logitech Z-5500 Computer set?

Hi, welcome ok lets start of slow. Yes you will need an amp of sorts AV receiver is the best bet. Normally speakers do not have any amps in them unlike the logitec computer speaker stuff. They will sound heaps better but you have to remember that they will not produce the same amount of bass as you might expect. You would need to add a subwoofer for the low freq sounds.

There are alot of good book shelve speakers out there with and without stands. There is currently a good thread in the Loudspeaker section of the forum you might want to check out

lol you sound alot like me a few months back. Starting to take audio serious and all. I felt exactly the same as you.

Ok since i dont live in the states i dont know what the local prices are. When some of the other read this thread they will throw several setups your way and argue till the sun comes up about which they think is better.

In my opinion i really like the wharfedale diamond 9 range. But around here a real popular brand is SVS.

With regards to a receiver i got a pioneer vsx 517. Does 5.1 at 90W per channel. Its a pretty sturdy little thing and it cost bugger all.

It all depends you can go as crazy as you like there are book shelves which will set you back thousands and some that only set you back a few hundered. How much are you looking to spend ?? The Audioholics store is a good place to start. Have a look at the prices there.

For the receiver if you dont want HDMI connections its safe to go with a cheaper model. the YAMAHA and PIONEER receivers are pretty good in my eyes if you are only starting out.

i figure a budget of 300-400 for any of the ff:

-stereo receiver e.g. HK3490 or HK3390
-surround receiver e.g. usual suspects from Yamaha/Denon AV receivers
-integrated amp e.g. Rotel, Yamaha AX497

are you talking 400 for the speakers and amp? or just the amp? or just the speakers?

also, check out the bookshelf speakers recommended in this thread:
