Hey everyone,

I've posted questions here and there on this site for some time now. I'm still pretty new at this stuff so here I am again lookin for some input.

I have a guy at work who is selling some Wharfedale Evo-40s. I don't know much about Wharfedales and haven't found too many of what I'd call legit reviews on them. Anybody have any pros/cons about these speakers. He's asking $350 for the pair.

I'd be pushing them with an Onkyo HT-RC160, which is basically the same as a 607. The only main diff here would be 80 wpc on mine vs 90 wpc on the 607.

That's a bargain. Wharfedale have an illustrious history. They are now part of IAG, like Quad and some other brands. For soem reason those speakers have sold very well in Australia.

We have a had a number of posters from time to time who seem very pleased with them.

At that price you can't go wrong, as if you don't like them you will easily get your money out of them.

Even if they only sold for 66% of msrp and are in good condition, that sounds like a great deal :)

Yes, the OP should jump on these.

Apparently their finish is excellent.
From the specs you might think they are three way, but they are not, they are 2.5 ways, which is excellent.

The 150 Hz crossover will be a first order network to the lower driver for BSC.

It's sad that they basically pulled out of the US market a long time ago- they were very easy to listen to, back in the late '70s and early '80s when I heard them.

The are very nice looking speakers too! I would love to hear the Opus 2 which appears to have the ATC midrange driver that Dr. Mark likes.

I would "settle" for some EVO-40's in rosewood however.;)

Thanks for everything above, I think I'm gonna bite the nail on these.

I just went and took a look at them today. They are in a basically black ash finish, which isn't too bad. I was really hoping for the rosewoods, but everything I have is black so I guess that's for the better. They sound pretty nice, considering I'm running Sony SS-F6000's as my mains right now.. They have a scuff or two on the front, it's not too noticeable and nothing a little touch up can't fix.

1. Do you guys think the 80 wpc my receiver provides will be enough to power these? The guy was running his with a Onkyo 606, which is 90 wpc. My receiver doesn't have pre-outs to run an amplifier also and being I'm still in college, I don't wanna dump a whole bunch of money on a new receiver/amp combo

2. In terms of blending with my system...
Fronts - Sony SS-F6000's
Center - Sony SS-CN5000
Surrounds - BIC DV62's
Back Surrounds - Kenwood KV-S300's
Subs - 2 Dayton Sub-120s

Which should I drop? I don't really want to replace my Fronts since the Center might not match with those very well. I also have a pair of SS-B3000's and a pair of Yamaha NS-A636's if these would sound better in place of other speakers. I've never actually had all my speakers in the same place at the same time, otherwise I'd just try it out myself to see what sounds better.

Any suggestions would be great!

Your other speakers are junk. Just use your new Wharfedales and your subs and use a phantom center. Your other speakers will be quality spoilers.
